My back rested against Maddox’s chest as my legs were stretched out in the bathtub. I couldn’t even see them with all the soft foam floating on the surface of the warm bath.

I’d had so many doubts earlier that the night would end with the two of us talking things out and as I sat there with him, feeling his arms around me, my heart was at peace because he wasn’t mad at me anymore.

I was still thinking about the lengths I had gone to just to make him notice me when he snapped me out of my thoughts with his next words.

“You know,” he said behind me, his chin resting on my shoulder, “I still can’t believe you wore my precious shirt.”

I chuckled with disbelief as I turned my head slightly to look back at him. “You left me no other choice. I had to make you notice me and talk to me.”

As I waited for his response, I kept looking back at him, but when it was time for him to speak, he pressed his lips on mine for a quick kiss that actually made my heart flutter as I didn’t expect it.

I was still blinking rapidly to process it when he said, “I actually wanted to get it washed as soon as possible, but I think I want to keep it that way a little longer. It smells like you and I love that.”

“I never thought I’d ever hear you say that,” I said, as I looked away.

He tightened his arms around me, dramatically inhaling my scent. “Yup, I love the way you smell.”

I knew he didn’t mean it at that moment as I was covered in the scent of the bath, but it didn’t make me feel any less amused.

When he placed his lips on my cheek, they were just as warm as the temperature of the bath, making my lips curve into a smile.

I let him kiss my cheek for as long as he wanted and when he finally gave it to rest, he leaned back as he spoke again.

“How was Aunt Patricia’s first day at her new job?”

My face lit up before I could even tell him.

“When I spoke to her, she said it was a pleasant experience.” I looked down at the foam like I could see my Aunt right there, working in her uniform. “I’m actually glad you asked. Just so you know, she wanted to tell you herself, but she didn’t want to bother you. She knows you’re a busy person.”

“You’re right about that. Speaking of being busy, I have a busy schedule on Friday, but I’m cancelling all of it because you have to meet Dean.”

My head shot back to meet his gaze, my eyebrows raised in surprise as I shook my head with a smile.

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I want to.”

It’s really okay,” I said softly. “Dean is actually paying for my flight.”

He scoffed as he squeezed me possessively for a second. “No, he’s not.”

“What?”

“He won’t be paying for anything,” he said with a hint of cockiness. “That’s because I’ll be the one to personally take you to him.”

My face lit up so hard that he narrowed his eyes as he studied me.

“Look at you, all excited that your boyfriend is taking you.”

I tried to wipe the smile off my face, but failed. “It’s just… at one point, I didn’t even know if you were still coming with me. You were still mad at me.”

He kissed my cheek again. “I’m definitely coming with you. As long as you want me there.”

“I need you there,” I said without hesitation.

“Then I’ll be there,” he replied just as easily.

When he spoke again, he sounded amused. “And I can’t wait for Thursday.”

My eyebrows furrowed as I looked at the mirror on the other side of the bathroom. “What’s happening on Thursday?”

“That’s the day Margot finds out she’s walking away with nothing.”

I laughed as I pictured it, the satisfaction already coming to me like it had already happened. But the humor faded when another thought came to mind.

“What about your dad?” I asked softly. “How’s he handling everything?”

He exhaled. “The press just won’t leave it alone. It’s messy and it’s everywhere.” I felt him shrug behind me. “But he doesn’t care. He just wants it to be over and…”

Even though he trailed off, I didn’t speak right away as I felt that he had more to say.

“There could’ve been two divorces in the family,” he finally said. “That would’ve made the situation a lot worse.”

I knew that he was talking about Grayson and Tiffany, but I didn’t even let the topic linger on my tongue. Instead, I reached for the soap and changed the subject smoothly.

“I’ve already made several copies of everything on the memory card Kate gave to me,” I said. “Just in case.”

“There’s no need to do that.”

I paused with the soap in my hand. “Do what?”

“Avoid talking about him when you’re around me.”

I raised my eyebrows in surprise as I put down the soap again. “I thought you said-”

“I know what I said,” he interrupted me gently but firmly. “But I’ve thought about it again and there’s no need for me to make you keep his name out of your mouth.” Then, with exaggerated seriousness, he said, “I’ll go first. Grayson, Grayson, Grayson.”

I rolled my eyes as I chuckled. “That’s not funny.”

I was still laughing about it when his arms suddenly tightened around me and he turned serious in a way that made me believe it.

“They’re definitely still together,” he said, “Or at least they’re making it look that way. Tiffany keeps transferring her shares to him, probably as a way to make him shut up and not divorce her.”

“And Josh?” I asked.

“He’s still around. How can he not be when she’s still carrying that baby?”

I gasped. “She’s keeping it?”

He sighed. “It looks like it for now. Josh’s business is also still running. I thought it would’ve been shut down by now, but nope.”

I sighed heavily. “That’s just so messed up.”

“That shit definitely is.” Then, his next words came out in a lighter tone. “Enough of that. I’m starving.”

I nodded in agreement with him as I was starving too.

As we washed up, I found myself wondering if Grayson and Tiffany would ever be the same again, but I reminded myself that I didn’t have to think about him and whatever happened to his marriage shouldn’t change anything for me.

After Maddox and I got dressed, we came downstairs to the dining table where dinner was served. He barely let me eat on my own. He made sure to feed me as much as he could using his own fork. I let him do it each time because I loved the way he looked at my mouth each time the food went in.

It took a while, but he finally gave it a rest and leaned back in his seat.

When he was in the middle of taking a sip, his phone screen on the table lit up, so he looked down at it and then…he instantly choked on his drink.
