The week had gone by quickly and Thursday had finally arrived, the day when Margot’s entire world would come crashing down.

I accompanied my father to court. His demeanor was calm, but I’d caught him smirking a few times, like he couldn’t wait to see her reaction.

Tiffany should’ve been there, too, but she chose to stay away as she couldn’t pick a side. As for me, it was pretty obvious.

After my father and I got settled in our seats, I took out my phone to send a quick text to Harper that we were about to begin.

Her reply was plain text, but I could imagine her saying all that out loud with so much excitement. She anticipated Margot’s reaction as much as I did.

Before Anna’s memory card, I hadn’t seen Harper so bright and joyful. She spoke about her sister a lot and I found myself laughing every time I thought about it. If only she knew what was coming her way.

Everything seemed to be going so well for her and I hoped it wasn’t about to slow down. We’d already set the time to fly out to meet Dean and I hoped it would be a pleasant experience when hearing the rest of what he had to say.

I was thinking about what could possibly go wrong when the sound of heels clicking against the floor caught my attention. I looked up and subtly shook my head. Margot had just arrived and she walked into the courtroom like she owned the place or at least believed that she was about to. She was dressed in a tailored white suit, a diamond necklace and diamond earrings to complete the look. She had her chin raised higher than usual, like she wanted my father and I to know just how superior she was at that moment.

She didn’t even look over at us, like there was a wall between us. My father and I glanced at each other with a knowing look, trying to hold in our laughter.

Her attorney followed behind her and when she got to her seat, he pulled out a chair for her. She took her seat and crossed her legs, then whispered something to him with a smile that made her seem like she had already won.

She was still whispering something to him when the judge entered. We rose, then sat back down and just like that, the performance began.

Margot’s attorney opened with confidence as he spoke about the length of the marriage, the sacrifices she had made and the role she played as a supportive wife even when she felt them drift apart. As he said that she was entitled to half of his assets, I glanced at her and she nodded in agreement with her lips pursed in satisfaction.

Then, she finally looked over at my father and her gaze shifted to me just for a second. It was dismissive, like I wasn’t even supposed to be there and my father had just brought me along for emotional support.

I almost smiled as I thought about what was coming her way.

When it was my father’s attorney’s turn, he requested that current ownership documents be entered into the record and she rolled her eyes like it was a waste of time and she had already won.

Her attorney didn’t object and she didn’t seem to have a problem with it either. Because this was the part where she believed the numbers finally got to be read out loud in favor of her.

After the judge gave his approval, a clerk distributed the documents to the opposing attorney and as he began to flip through them, I saw it clearly. He straightened in his seat, his eyes narrowing more and more as he continued to flip the document.

His silence went on for so long that Margot tilted her head, leaning towards him as if asking if everything was alright.

He didn’t answer her right away.

Then, he finally leaned towards her to whisper. I couldn’t hear the words, but I didn’t have to because I recognized the panic even though he tried to stay professional.

She shook her head dismissively, like whatever she had just been told was far from the truth.

No,she said. That doesn’t make any sense!

She began to act like the courtroom was her home, her voice getting louder by the second. But as soon as the judge stepped in, she went silent and crossed her arms in protest.

My father’s attorney began to speak after the documents were also presented to the judge, but to her, it sounded like a bunch of bullshit.

Your Honor, Mr. Aldridge’s assets were legally transferred to his son, Maddox Aldridge.

Margot’s head snapped back towards me so fast that I thought she might have broken it.

What? She shot glares at my father and I, then stood up so abruptly that the chair scraped loudly against the floor. You did this behind my back?

She was about to go on a long rant when she was ordered to sit back down.

As soon as there was order again, the attorney continued, It was done in full compliance with the law and notably, before the petitioner made formal arrangements to dissolve the marriage and pursue a separate romantic relationship.

That made her freeze after uncrossing her arms and dropping them to her sides. She had just realized my father knew what she was up to.

The judge went on to ask for clarification and the attorney continued outlining all the documentation available to prove the relationship Margot was having with another man, along with conversations that indicated her plan to divorce my father in order to begin a new life with her lover.

That’s irrelevant!she yelled with no shame. I was going to leave anyway!

No matter how hard her attorney tried to make her shut her mouth, she was so furious that she just wouldn’t

I glanced at my father and he was just smirking. He didn’t have to say a word to her. It was all playing out just as he had wanted.

When the judge gave the final ruling, it was in favor of my father. The divorce was granted and there would be no division of assets as they all belonged to me.

It was over now, but Margot didn’t cry. She just sat there, staring straight ahead like she was still processing

her loss.

My father and I got up from our seats without saying a word to her in that courtroom. We walked past her like she wasn’t even there.

It was only when we were in the corridor with his attorney that he was the first to speak.

Well,” he chuckled triumphantly. I need a glass of whiskey with some ice.”

Me too,” I said to him. Why don’t we-

How could you?!Margot’s annoying voice interrupted me from a distance.

My father sighed with an eye roll, like he was prepared for that.

When she was close enough, I had to hold in my laugh at how teary her eyes had become.

How could you do this to me?she yelled as she attempted to slap him.

He grabbed her hand and pushed it back, widening the distance between them.

The nerve of you to be mad at me when you’re the reason all this happened,he said. If you ever thought you were smart, I just proved you wrong.

She balled her hands into fists, her jaw clenching so hard that she trembled.

While she looked like she had so much to say, she kept her lips sealed as she glared into his eyes. He just nonchalantly stared back into hers.

Finally, her tears rolled down her cheeks and she screamed in his face as she tried to hit his chest, but he grabbed her by the wrists to make her stop.

Still, she wouldn’t stop screaming. Security had to step in to control the situation.

How could you give it all to this fucking son of yours?she yelled as she was getting dragged away. What about Tiffany?
