Chapter 2
Greyson felt a sting at the sight of that smile.
“Why is it so important?” He started to press her, but Sylvia let out another pained whimper and clutched his sleeve.
“Grey… please, let’s just go… I’m so scared…”
Greyson took one last glance at Allison standing by the shoulder of the road before finally hitting the gas.
The black Audi sped away, leaving Allison behind in a cloud of exhaust.

Allison stood by the roadside, rubbing the ring gently between her fingers.
She, Greyson, and Sylvia had grown up together in the same place. She had always loved Greyson, but Greyson had only ever had eyes for Sylvia.
After that, Sylvia married Greyson’s brother-in-arms, Carson Mackeridge. After Carson was killed in the line of duty, Sylvia
returned home as a widow, becoming the fragile, delicate flower that everyone felt the need to protect.
Greyson doted on Sylvia, driven by both a sense of duty and his own personal affection for her.
He had only married Allison because of the pressure his father put on him from his deathbed.
For the first three years of their marriage, she had given him everything, believing she could eventually thaw his cold heart.
That was until two weeks ago, when the debris flow hit without warning.
She and Sylvia were trapped at the same time.
As the commander of the rescue team, Greyson didn’t hesitate-he rushed to Sylvia first.
Allison didn’t know why a man like him had set his sights on her, but she knew one thing for certain: she no longer needed Greyson.
When she got home, Allison rummaged through her belongings until she found the piece of paper Greyson had carelessly scrawled on their wedding night three years ago, when he was drunk.
Furious at being forced into the marriage, he had drafted a divorce agreement right then and there.
“Due to irreconcilable differences, I voluntarily divorce Allison. All assets shall be tran other nothing.” This book had been added on your bookshelf.
The handwriting was a mess, but the signature and the inked thumbprint were legit.
Back then, she had cried as she hid the paper away, convinced that if she just loved him enough, they could make it work for a lifetime.
Now, it seemed this was the only act of kindness he had ever shown her in their entire marriage.
Allison took the agreement to a law firm to have it notarized.
Once the mandatory waiting period ended, she would file the papers at the courthouse. Then, she and Greyson would finally be over for good.
