It Doesn’t Matter Anymore novel Chapter 22

Chapter 22

The morning after returning home, James woke me up abruptly. His face was anything but happy, and his voice carried a clear edge of annoyance. Why did you come back without letting us know?he demanded.

Yawning, I replied nonchalantly, I didn’t want to interrupt you two.

James looked even more irritated, raising his voice,Roselyn, stop with the passiveaggressive nonsense! Lorelai cut her vacation short to send me back because she was worried you might be upset.

Narrowing his eyes, he continued, You’re not actually jealous, are you?

Before I could answer, he was already on a tirade. Roselyn, you need to grow up.Lorelai and I have been close since we were kids, practically inseparable. Of course,I’m going to look out for her!He added, She’s only twentythree, and you’re pushing thirty. Why are you competing with someone younger?

I’ve been running around nonstop,my legs are about to give out, haven’t had a decent night’s sleep, and you can’t cut

me some slack? You had to embarrass me like this!he vented.

I almost laughed; his busy schedule was his issue, not mine. Why should I feel sorry for him?

I touched the bandage on my face, and he furrowed his brow, suddenly falling silent.

The next day,I headed to the office to put in some extra hours.

Around lunchtime,James called, his voice groggy.’Roselyn, where are you? You didn’t cook.’

I answered truthfully, I’m working overtime.

He snapped,Give me a break, you’re on annual leave today.

I chuckled, I told you before, I only have two days of leave.’He never took my words seriously.

After hanging up,I signed the work transfer documents and handed them to Amos.

Amos raised an eyebrow,Roselyn, the transfer is possible, but there’s a catch.

I was a bit puzzled and asked, What catch?
