It Doesn’t Matter Anymore novel Chapter 5

Chapter 5

News of Greyson’s injury spread through the compound like wildfire.

Jimmy, a young guard, came knocking at her door. “Allison, Colonel Debeaux is being difficult with the nurses. He won’t let them change his dressing. He says it’s too painful. He’s asking for that chowder you make…”

Allison sat on the couch reading, her eyes never leaving the page. “I don’t know how to make it.”

Jimmy grew anxious. “Allison, he was injured because he saved someone. How can you…”

“He was injured while saving Sylvia. She’s right there with him. Let her make it.”

Jimmy left, defeated.

Over the next few days, Greyson sent a steady stream of messengers- his fellow officers and even the chaplain-to plead his case.

“Allison, Grey just wants to see you…”

“Come on, Allison, no marriage is perfect. You shouldn’t let the sun go down on your anger…”

Allison’s response was always the same three things: “Busy” “No.” “Find someone else.”

On the third day, just as Allison was about to seal the storage box full of their memories, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed behind her.

“Are you really this heartless?” Greyson stood in the doorway, his arm bound in a sling and his face pale. Anger and confusion burned in his eyes.

Allison turned around, her tone perfectly level. “Isn’t Ms. Hagger taking care of you? What would I even be doing there? Playing the third wheel?”

“Allison!” Greyson’s chest heaved with suppressed rage. “Sylvia is a guest! How could I let a guest wait on me hand and foot? You’re my wife. Shouldn’t you be by my side at a time like this?”

“So you only remember I’m your wife when you need a servant.” Allison smiled, but the expression didn’t reach her eyes. “You’ve got it all figured out, haven’t you, Colonel Debeaux?”
