“Lois! Where were you? I tried the mind link. It was lae hitting a wall” He sounded annoyed

He smelled like moonflowers. And underneath that, the cheap, sticky sweet scent of an Omega in heat. My rate mink before I could stop myself

“Just walked near the forest edge,” I said, my voice flat

He didn’t notice a thing. His face lit up. “Guess what? The den’s finished Let’s go this weekend, just us two nights foutlogs e

Go there? To that dirt patch where he and Ada had rolled around? My blood went hot

I pushed down the urge to shift and rip into him. “I’m busy this weekend”

His smile slipped for a second. Then he saw the box in my hands.

His mood flipped. “For me?” he asked, eyes bright.

“Mhm.” I handed it over.

His hands were all over it, tearing at the paper. “What is it? Cufflinks? A new tie clip? My Luna never gets me gifts.”

I pressed my hand over his, stopping him. A smile touched my lips. It felt dead. “Don’t open it. Wait a week.”

“Why?”

“It’s a big gift. Needs a special day. A full moon.”

That was my “surprise.” Him opening it would land best when I was already gone.

My fake smile blinded him. He looked intrigued, and put the box on the high shelf. “Okay, I’ll listen. One week.”

He had no idea the ring was gone from my finger. His mind hadn’t been here, in this den, for a long time.

The next night, he put a blindfold on me. “Making it up to you,” he said, voice full of fake excitement. “Been too busy with the pack.”

The car stopped. I pulled the cloth off.

We were at the big theme park. Empty. Just magic lights and a Ferris wheel turning slow in the dark.

“Rented the whole thing,” he said, grabbing my hand. His eyes were too soft. “You said once you wanted to ride it with no one else around.”

Nearby guards watched, muttering.

“Alpha’s totally whipped.”

“That’s real love, right there.”

Het him hold my hand. I felt like a doll. Strings cut.

He played the perfect mate. Bought me hot deer milk. Knelt to tie my laces. Held my head on the roller coaster like the wind was some big threat

If I’d never seen that video, I might have bought it.

“Lois, I’ll get ice cream: Wait here” he said, putting me on a bench.

He walked off I reached for my phone, then saw his was on the bench next to me

#trand.

No name. Just a pink paw print.

I didn’t answer. I grabbed it, held my breath, and followed him. Like hunting

He didn’t go to the ice cream stall

He stood in the shadows behind it, phone to his ear. His voice was all wrong. Not his Alpha voice

What now, little slut? Heat again?” The words were casual, dirty. My stomach turned.
