It Doesn’t Matter Anymore novel Chapter 8

Chapter 8

By the time she returned to the compound, Allison felt as if she were coming apart at the seams.

Priscilla, the housekeeper, caught sight of her ghostly reflection and dropped her cleaning cloth in shock.

“Mrs. Debeaux? I thought you were at the gala. What on earth happened? Where is Mr. Debeaux?”

Allison simply shook her head, unable to find the words.

She had barely stepped into the bedroom when her phone buzzed. It was a bank notification.

“Your account ending in 8888 has received 850,000 dollars. Note: Compensation for the trouble. Sylvia is pretty shaken up, so I’m taking her to a resort in the suburbs to unwind for a few days. Rest and recover at home. – Greyson.”

Eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars.\

The price he paid to buy her two days in a cell, and to sell out her reputation for a lifetime.

Allison stared at the numbers on the screen, a wave of nausea washing over her.

She tossed her phone aside. Fighting through the searing pain and fever, she dragged her packed suitcase out from under the bed.

Priscilla’s eyes were red with tears as she tried to block her path. “Mrs. Debeaux, where are you going? You’re still injured, and you just got out of… that place. At least wait until you’ve recovered!”

Allison gently pushed her hand away. Her voice was hoarse but held a newfound iron resolve. “I can’t stay here any longer.”

Not another day, not another hour, not even a second.

She pulled out the notarized divorce agreement. With the signature Greyson had provided three years ago and the emergency filing her lawyer had just processed, the marriage would officially end today.
