Sarah had decided to head to Betrico, but before she left, she wanted to say goodbye to her close friends in Riverdale.

So she arranged to go out with a few of her girlfriends.

Meanwhile, Nina went back to her room.

Ryan was packing his luggage.

Noticing Nina seemed a bit down, Ryan got up, wrapped his arms around her waist, and rested his chin on her shoulder. He asked softly. Hey, what’s wrong? Did your chat with Sarah leave you feeling upset?

Nina paused for a moment, trying hard to keep her feelings in check. Then she said, My grandpa and grandma’s marriage was nothing but a calculated move. He never loved Sarah.

Back then, Nina didn’t really get what love was. If Sarah had told her all these stories before, she might’ve thought Samuel really loved her grandma.

But after being with Ryan, she finally understood what it meant to truly love someone.

The way Sarah described her life with Samuel. It wasn’t love at all.

For example, less than five years into their marriage, Sarah and Samuel stopped sharing a bed. Samuel claimed he needed to bury himself in his medical research.

When Nina heard Sarah talk about this, she just found it laughable.

If you really loved someone, how could you ever be fine with sleeping in separate rooms? If you truly cared, you’d want to stick together every chance you get,she wondered.

Ryan’s parents were in their fifties and still acted like newlyweds, putting young couples to shame.

Sarah, meanwhile, spent more than ten years with nothing but an empty bed for company.

Is that really what love is? Nina couldn’t help but think.

Plus, Samuel never really cared about raising their kids.

Samuel pretty much never bothered with any of Nina’s dad, two uncles, and two aunts.

If you truly loved someone, could you really just turn your back on your own kids? Nina thought. Those kids were supposed to be the proof of his love for Sarah Shouldn’t he have been happy to have them?

And Sarah loved embroidery, but Samuel always said he was worried she’d wear herself out. He told her to drop it and just focus on looking after the kids.

Sarah enjoyed playing the piano, but Samuel called it tacky and said she should put her energy into growing the company

instead.

Sarah adored fresh flowers, but every year, Samuel only ever brought her fake ones.

After all those years together, the thing Samuel gave Sarah most often was flowers.

The only gift he ever gave her that was actually different was that pocket watch, and Sarah still keeps it safe like it’s her most precious treasure.

But what Sarah never realized was that even the pocket watch was just another part of Samuel’s plan. It was never really meant for Sarah.

All of it, just so Nina would end up creating the medicine.

But Sarah was so hopelessly in love, she just couldn’t see all the plotting going on behind the scenes of their marriage.

Ryan just held Nina in his arms, unable to find any words.

He always thought he was pretty good at weighing the pros and cons.

But now, looking at how Sarah’s whole marriage was built on manipulation, he was at a total loss for words, not sure how to comfort either Sarah or Nina.

Samuel didn’t just hurt Sarah. He hurt Nina, too.

Nina only believed in love because she thought her grandparents had it,he thought. But now, she saw that everything she believed in was nothing but a lie.’

Nina leaned into Ryan’s embrace, her fists balled tightly at her sides. The fury in her eyes was practically spilling over. She just couldn’t hold it back.

Ryan could tell Nina was about to lose it, so he quickly grabbed her shoulders. Nina, you need to calm down. Sarah’s been lied to for so many years, and you’re the only one who can make things right for her.

Don’t play right into Samuel’s hands!

Nina lifted her gaze to Ryan, locking eyes with those deep, soulful eyes of his. Just like that, she felt her anger slowly melt away, her heart finally settling down.

After a long pause, Nina finally broke the silence. Hand me a bottle of wine.

Once Ryan saw that Nina seemed a little steadier, he went downstairs to get her a bottle of wine.

He ran into Elaine and Ethan just as they got home.

Elaine’s gaze zeroed in on the wine bottle in Ryan’s hand, her brows knitting together. Wine in the middle of the day? Who’s drinking. Nina or you?

Nina hardly ever drank during the day.

Unlike most people, she had a million things to juggle, especially when the sun was up, so staying sharp was a must, and daytime drinking was pretty much off the table for her.

Unless, of course, something really upset her.

Elaine didn’t know Ryan all that well, but in the years he’d been with Nina, he always adapted to her habits and preferences

If Nina skipped drinking during the day, he’d follow suit and skip daytime drinks too.

Ryan shot Ethan a look, hesitated for a second, then said, It’s for Nina. Why don’t you guys come up, too? There’s something you both need to hear.

Elaine and Ethan shot each other a glance, but stayed silent.

Ethan grabbed a few bottles from the fridge, took Elaine’s hand, and headed upstairs with her.

Nina stood on the balcony, staring out at the scenery, her mind wandering with thoughts no one else could guess.

Hearing the door open, Nina turned around. When she saw Elaine and Ethan, she froze for a second. Then it clicked. Ryan must’ve asked them to come up.

Elaine walked over to Nina, her voice gentle and careful. Nina, are you alright?

Nina shook her head, her voice quiet as she said, Just sit down.

Elaine and Ethan pulled out chairs and sat down.

Ethan cracked open a beer and handed it to Elaine.

Ryan passed the wine to Nina.

They all grabbed their drinks, shared a silent toast, and started drinking.

After downing a bottle of wine, Nina finally broke the silence, her voice steady but serious. Ethan, there’s something I need to tell you.

For some reason, Ethan could sense that whatever Nina was about to say was really important.
