Amelia knew exactly what Mr. Martinez had left unsaid. This was just the beginning—the side effects of chemotherapy were only starting to show.
A crushing ache pressed down on Amelia’s chest, making it hard to breathe. She looked at Ruby, pale as a ghost, and would have traded her own life in a heartbeat if it meant Ruby could be healthy again.
Ruby curled up in Amelia’s arms, her brow furrowed tight. She hurt so much she couldn’t even summon the strength to sob, only able to whimper in pain.
All her life, Ruby had tried to hide her suffering so Amelia wouldn’t worry. If she could bear the pain, she’d grit her teeth and keep silent. But now, the agony was too much.
Tears streamed down Amelia’s cheeks. She wiped them away with the back of her hand, voice trembling as she asked, “Where does it hurt, honey? Let me rub it for you, okay?”
“My bones… my bones hurt…” Ruby had never known pain like this—her head spun, nausea rising, her whole body aching. The pain in her bones was like thousands of tiny ants biting her from the inside out. She sobbed, “Mom… I don’t want chemo anymore. I don’t ever want it again…”
Amelia knew Ruby had the right to make her own choices. But in that moment, a dark seed took root in her heart—she hated the person who’d promised to donate and then changed their mind.
Why give them hope, only to rip it away?
Ruby thrashed restlessly, caught in waves of pain. After an hour, the worst had passed, and she drifted into an exhausted sleep.
Her small face was streaked with drying tears, her brow still knotted even in restless dreams.
Amelia laid her gently on the bed, then slipped into the bathroom to splash cold water on her face.
The nurse drew the curtains and spoke softly, urging Amelia to get some rest. “This is a long, hard fight. You need to take care of yourself, too.”
Amelia’s eyes were red-rimmed. She couldn’t bear to look at Ruby for long—the more her daughter suffered, the deeper her own pain cut.
Needing fresh air, Amelia opened the door and nearly collided with someone about to knock.

I hope this couple gets back together and he is the donor for his daughter. Thank you for the new chapters....
How come in every novel I read on here the women don’t tell the men they are the father of their child? I find this ridiculous....
