Ashley nodded, still uneasy as she looked at Amelia. “Why don’t you call a friend to stay with you?”

“I’ll be fine. I can handle it alone.”

Ruby, her eyes dull and lifeless, looked up and asked, “Mommy, where are you going?”

Bending down, Amelia cupped Ruby’s face, kissed her gently, and whispered, “Mommy just needs to take care of something. I’ll be back soon, sweetheart.”

After Amelia left the hospital room, Ashley’s worry only deepened. Ruby lay in bed, listless and weak—so unlike the energetic little girl she usually was. How could a child so full of life suddenly become like this?

Ashley remembered Ruby’s previous hospital stays. The more she thought about it, the more something felt off. It was like the strange feeling had been there from the very beginning.

Once Ruby had closed her eyes, Ashley quietly slipped into the bathroom and closed the door behind her, quickly dialing Daniel’s number.

“Sir, Ruby’s been admitted to the hospital again. I really think something’s wrong this time.”

Daniel’s meeting was almost over. He signaled for his team to wrap up and strode out of the conference room, phone pressed to his ear. “What happened?”

“Ruby’s not feeling well, but this time it’s different. She’s so pitiful—she barely has any energy at all.”

“And Amelia?”

“She left, said she had something to do and would be back soon.”

Daniel frowned. Amelia treasured Ruby more than anything—she’d never just leave if Ruby was ill. He hung up on Ashley, ready to call Amelia himself, but before he could, Amelia’s call came through.

“Where are you?” Her voice sounded cold and metallic, maybe distorted by the signal.

“At the office. Is Ruby okay? You—”

“Stay put. I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”

A vague sense of unease crept over Daniel. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong.

He glanced at his watch, then called Cedric for an update on Violet.

“Ms. Scott’s already on the plane. Her security says everything’s normal.”

No unexpected issues. Daniel rubbed his forehead. Maybe he was just exhausted from the endless company problems lately.
