Daniel was at a total loss for words. What could he possibly say? The truth was undeniable—the donor liver had been snatched because of him. He’d known it was wrong, and still, he’d done it.

Amelia’s tears splashed onto his wrist, scalding his skin. His voice broke with guilt and shame. “I’m sorry... I’m a bastard. I never should have taken that liver. Hit me, scream at me—anything you want, I’ll do it. Just... please, stop crying.”

“Ruby’s condition got worse when she lost her chance at a transplant,” Amelia choked out, every memory a fresh knife wound. “She had her first round of chemo today. She was so sick she couldn’t stop vomiting, her whole body wracked with pain. She’s never hurt so much before. She cried in my arms and begged for the pain to stop. If I could, I’d give my life just to make her healthy again.”

“Stop,” Daniel pleaded, every word from her mouth slicing him to pieces. “Please, stop. I was wrong. I’m a monster, I deserve whatever you want to do to me—just stop...”

But the more he begged her to stop, the more she needed to go on. The pain was too much for her to bear alone; if she didn’t let it out, she was afraid she’d break.

“You’re right, you do deserve it. If anything happens to Ruby, even a hundred deaths wouldn’t be enough punishment for you. Daniel, I hate you—I’ve never hated anyone like I hate you now. Not even after what you did to me back then.”

“Whatever we had ended long ago, but you never let me go. Because of you, Ruby and I have suffered enough, haven’t we? You always talk about love, about how much you care, but your love is selfish. Your selfishness cost Ruby her chance. Now she’s standing at death’s door, and at any moment, she could be taken from me.”

Amelia seized his shirt and beat her fists against his chest. Daniel stood there, motionless, eyes squeezed shut, letting her hit him, letting her pour out her pain.

Each heavy, desperate blow fell on him, but none of it hurt as much as the ache in his heart.

When Amelia finally ran out of strength, her fingers went slack. Daniel wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. “I’m sorry.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“I’ll find a way to get Ruby another liver. Please, don’t do this to yourself.”

Amelia let out a bitter laugh, her lips twisting. “And how’s that going to work? Are you going to steal someone else’s chance now?”

For the first time, Daniel understood what it meant to feel utterly destroyed inside. The person he’d sworn to protect was the one he’d wounded most deeply.
