Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 451

A sudden roar filled Amelia’s mind, as if the world had stretched and compressed all sound at once. For a few seconds, she couldn’t hear anything at all.

She said... Daniel took Ruby’s liver donor? That’s impossible.

Impossible!

“Don’t believe me?” Violet let out a laugh, her voice shaking with giddy satisfaction. “Go ask Daniel yourself. Oh, and by the way, the boy who got Ruby’s donor already had his surgery. He’s recovering well—his whole family is so grateful to Daniel.”

Amelia remembered all those calls Daniel had answered, people thanking him.

Her head buzzed, a thousand bees beating their wings inside her skull, threatening to burst out. She braced herself against the wall, the cold tiles biting into her palm.

Violet watched Amelia sway, barely holding herself together, and decided to twist the knife. “And you know who that boy is? He’s the son of an old family friend of mine—someone I owed a favor. I mentioned it to Daniel, and he agreed immediately to help.”

Amelia’s lips trembled. She couldn’t force out a single word, not even a sound.

Violet took her time, savoring the sight of Amelia crumbling, broken and defeated.

When she’d had her fill, Violet shoved the bouquet of sunflowers into Amelia’s arms. “Just trying to help, you know. Didn’t want you blinded by your feelings. Anyway, that’s all I had to say. I’ll see myself out.”

Amelia felt numb, cold to her very bones. She didn’t know how long she stood there before her grip loosened, the sunflowers slipping from her arms and thudding to the floor. She slid down the icy wall tiles and sat there, head buried in her knees, sobbing silently.

No sound escaped her, but her shoulders shook violently.

Every now and then, someone passed by in the hallway—a scene like this was nothing new in a hospital. Some showed sympathy, some regret, but most just walked on, untouched.

That’s just the way pain makes its rounds—hitting each person in its own time, and everyone finds their own way through it. Some sink into it and never come back, others pick up their bags and keep moving, even if it’s alone.

Ruby didn’t wake until night had fallen.
