Inside the room, Daniel’s head snapped to the side from the blow, leaving him dazed for a moment or two.

He pressed his tongue to the inside of his cheek and muttered, “Amelia.”

His voice was low, edged with annoyance. “You hit me all the time, but at least give me a reason. I—”

Smack!

Another slap landed, perfectly mirroring the first.

Daniel wasn’t the type to take things lying down. In fact, his temper was legendary—except with Amelia. With her, he was more of a declawed tiger, fierce but docile.

But even the tamest tiger has claws. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Amelia raise her hand again. He grabbed her wrist before she could strike. “Have you lost your mind?”

Anger flared within him, but when he caught sight of Amelia’s reddened eyes, it was as if someone had dumped a bucket of ice water over his head. The fire instantly fizzled out.

“What’s wrong, sweetheart? Why are you crying?”

He reached up to brush the tears from her eyes, but she turned her head and bit down hard on his arm.

“Ow—!”

Daniel was completely thrown. What on earth was going on? She’d shown up out of nowhere, refused to say a word, and now she was hitting and biting him.

“Does it hurt?” Her voice was hoarse.

He didn’t need to pull up his sleeve to know that was going to leave a mark. “What do you think?”

“That pain is nothing compared to what Ruby’s going through.”

Daniel froze. “What happened to Ruby?”
