The little girl was adorable and clearly loved my dessert.
Since a child was present, neither the woman nor I spoke further, though we both had our own thoughts brewing.
"Sylvia, go play over there when you're done eating," the woman said as the child was finishing up, sending her away.
"Alright, just tell me what you want," I said directly, even though I already had a guess.
"Ms. Crown, you're a smart woman. I think you already understand why I brought this child here." She remained somewhat reserved.
I pressed my lips together slightly. "I have nothing to do with the Gildon family."
The woman smiled, her perfectly painted red lips striking against her complexion. "That kind of talk would really break the hearts of the Gildon family's departed souls."
"That's just the truth. I grew up thanks to their kindness, but that's all there is to it.
"I don't know how much you know about my relationship with the Gildon family, but it's not something outsiders can judge." My words were both an explanation and a warning.
"Fine. I don't care about your past grudges, nor do I want to meddle. I brought the child here simply because she's a Gildon, and everything that belonged to the Gildon family should rightfully go to her. Isn't that fair?"
The woman finally got to the point.
Just as I expected—it was all about the money.
"And how should I address you?" I asked, realizing we had been talking for a while, yet I still didn't know her name.
"Yvonne Reynolds," she said with a slight smile. "Do you need to see my ID?"
