Lisa was putting on a good show of being asleep. Surely, she hadn't expected Logan to pull such a move?
She didn't dare move.
After all, it would be even more awkward if she did.
So, she continued to pretend, letting him carry her upstairs and into her room.
Fortunately, her face was pressed against his chest. She could sneak a peek without being noticed. All she could see was his white undershirt, and she caught a whiff of the crisp cedarwood scent on him.
Yes, it was cedarwood.
It didn't smell like makeup or perfume.
Did this mean he hadn't hugged Joelle when they separated? That there had been no intimate interaction between them?
The thought flitted through her mind, but Lisa quickly dismissed it. Of course he would hug and kiss his girlfriend. What was she even thinking?
"Lisa, oh Lisa, snap out of it! This is your uncle. Regardless of whether he's a Cohen or not, he's still Uncle Logan..."
As she rambled to herself, she suddenly heard him call her softly, "Liz."
Her nerves tensed, and she bit her lip, afraid of responding unintentionally.
"You actually fell asleep?" Logan whispered, "Aren't you usually a light sleeper?"
The moment he said this, she felt guilty.
As an OB-GYN, she was used to being called out in the middle of the night for deliveries. She had always been a light sleeper, waking at the slightest sound. Pretending to be so deeply asleep was starting to feel like a bad act.
But now that he'd spoken, she couldn't just open her eyes.
Hearing the sound of the door closing, Lisa's tense nerves immediately relaxed. She lifted her face from the blankets and took a deep breath. Then, she buried it again while her legs thrashed about on the bed.
She had no idea how she had fallen asleep. When she woke up, she saw Alistair doing his morning workout in the yard and Nadine watering the flowers. Martha was there too, keeping them company.
Lisa rubbed her eyes, wondering if Logan hadn't released a statement about his background. Otherwise, why was everything so peaceful?
She quickly grabbed her phone. Before opening the video news, she noticed the flood of messages on WhatsApp. Both group chats and private messages were filled with questions about Logan's true background.
It seemed he had indeed made a statement. But why were her grandparents and Martha so calm about it? Had they not seen the statement? Had he deliberately hidden something from them?
Lisa, feeling suspicious, headed downstairs. As she stepped out the door, she thought back to the previous night when Logan had carried her. When she passed by his room, she instinctively glanced inside. The bed was neatly made, with no signs that anyone had slept there.
But she was certain he had come back last night.
