Meanwhile, up in the executive suite of Lancaster Corporation.
Arthur knocked on the door, his expression grave.
“Come in.”
Hudson was bent over a stack of documents. When Arthur pushed the door open, he glanced up briefly. “What is it?”
“Boss, security just reported in. Edmond Sterling arrived in San Francisco this morning. He blocked Mrs. Lancaster's car in the Star Tower parking garage earlier. They exchanged a few words, and after she took the elevator up, he stayed behind. He's still waiting down there.”
The pen in Hudson's hand stalled.
“He's still there?”
“Yes, sir. Still there.”
A heavy silence blanketed the office.
Hudson lowered his gaze, lazily twirling the fountain pen between his fingers.
“Boss, should I...” Arthur made a swift, subtle hand gesture, his meaning unmistakably lethal.
Hudson flicked his eyes toward his head of security.
His gaze was completely flat, entirely devoid of emotion, yet it was terrifying enough to make Arthur instantly avert his eyes and swallow the rest of his sentence.
“Hold off for now,” Hudson said, leaning back in his leather chair, his tone smooth and detached. “I'll handle him myself.”
Arthur gave a curt nod and stepped back.
Hudson cast his eyes downward and pulled the small, matte-black pill bottle from his desk drawer, rolling it thoughtfully against his palm.
He stared at the container for a few long seconds before tossing it back into the drawer.
...
Edmond spent the entire day waiting in that subterranean garage.
He leaned heavily against a concrete pillar, surrounded by a scattered pile of cigarette butts. His designer dress shirt was a crumpled mess, the top two buttons undone, and his sleeves rolled haphazardly up his forearms. He was a far cry from the immaculate, polished Sterling Heir everyone knew.
“Edmond, it's almost seven. She probably slipped out hours ago.”
“Impossible.”
Edmond cut Ferris off, his voice raspy from smoke and exhaustion. “Her car is right there. It hasn't moved an inch.”
Ferris let out a heavy sigh and kept his mouth shut.
