Madly Yours (Nora Reed) novel Chapter 146

"Weren't you?" Penelope frowned deeply. "When Mr. Lancaster spoke to you, you barely responded. When he poured you a drink, you completely ignored it. Do you have any idea how rude that is? What if you pissed him off and the Westside project fell through? Could you shoulder that responsibility?"

Nora cut her off mid-rant. "Silas knows I'm not Jade."

Penelope froze, the color draining from her face.

"He said if Hudson finds out, he'll feed me to the dogs."

Penelope turned deathly pale. "H-How does he know?"

"Mom, do you still think having a few drinks and chatting with him won't cost me anything?"

"He knows I'm not Jade. He knows I'm a fake replacement bride. He has me by the throat, and he could have me killed at any second."

"Nora, I... I had no idea..."

"Of course you didn't."

Nora interrupted her, a surge of emotion finally breaking through her composed facade. "All you care about is the Reed family's business. All you care about is securing your status in this house. All you care about..."

All you care about is Jade and Xavier.

Never me.

"Nora, that's not what I meant..." Penelope stood up, reaching out to grab her hand.

Nora stepped back, avoiding her touch.

"Silas Lancaster is a dangerous man. You and Marcus need to stay far away from him. As for the Westside project..."

She paused. "Just let it go."

"Let it go?"

Penelope's voice shot up an octave. "How can we let it go? Do you know how much blood, sweat, and tears Marcus poured into this project? If we give this up, the Reed family is ruined!"

Staring at her mother, Nora suddenly felt incredibly exhausted.

"Do whatever you want."

She turned and walked toward the door.

"Nora!" Penelope chased after her. "Wait, I'm not done talking..."

Nora didn't stop. Her pace only quickened.
