"You got it!" Mrs. Caldwell called out. She turned and headed into the kitchen, glancing back at Hudson as she pushed the curtain aside. Shaking her head with a smile, she muttered, "Such a perfect couple."
Nora's ears burned. She kept her head down, flipping through the menu on the table as if she were deeply engrossed in looking for new dishes.
Hudson sat across from her. He stretched a long leg under the table, tapping his foot against hers.
"It sounds so good when you call me husband."
Nora shot him a warning glare and pulled her foot back, but he pursued her, hooking his leg directly around her calf.
"Call me that a few more times when we get home, alright?"
Her face turned completely red. "Stop it. We're in public."
"So what if we're in public? Is it illegal to call me your husband in public?"
She was rendered entirely speechless. Giving up on arguing, she refused to look at him and focused entirely on studying the menu.
The food arrived quickly, piping hot steam rising to mingle with mouthwatering aromas.
The dumplings were plump and perfectly steamed, their translucent wrappers revealing the tender pink shrimp inside.
The rice rolls were silky and drenched in a special soy sauce, practically melting in the mouth. The seafood soup was rich and creamy, loaded with fresh fish, calamari, peanuts, and crispy croutons.
The sweet buns were freshly baked, golden and crisp on the outside. A thick slice of butter was wedged in the center, half-melted by the residual heat. Every bite was a perfect blend of sweet and savory.
Nora picked up a dumpling with her fork, blew on it to cool it down, and popped the whole thing into her mouth. The fresh sweetness of the shrimp and the crispness of the bamboo shoots exploded on her tongue, making her eyes flutter shut in pure satisfaction.
Hudson barely touched his food. He sat across from her, leisurely sipping the hot tea Mrs. Caldwell had poured for him, his dark gaze pinned entirely on her.
"Why aren't you eating?" Nora dropped a dumpling onto his plate.
He glanced down at the food, picked it up, and took a slow, deliberate bite. "It's fine."
"Just fine? This is amazing!"
Nora popped another one into her mouth, speaking around her food. "Are you just not interested in eating?"
Hudson leaned back in his chair. His eyes traced the soft curve of her cheek as she chewed. "Watching you eat is much more interesting. Taking you, however, is the most interesting."
Nora shot him a glare and completely ignored him.
Once she was full, she leaned back against her chair, rubbing her stomach with a long, contented sigh.
