Liana couldn't believe her ears.
She gripped her phone tightly, her face twisted with sheer fury. "Who do you think you are? An Imposter like you actually thinks she can go after Jude? You're out of your mind!"
"There's no need to be so hostile, Ms. Fairchild."
Macy frowned, clearly displeased. "Aren't you just the Fairchild ward? In terms of status, how are you any better than a fake heiress like me?"
She paused, her voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "Besides, you're the one who brought me in to play this part. We're in the same boat. Tell me, if the Fairchild family finds out you're the one who hired me, what do you think they'll do to you?"
Liana's breathing hitched. Her knuckles turned white around the phone, her perfectly manicured nails digging painfully into her palms.
"Macy Monahan, I swear I will tear you apart!"
Macy pressed her lips together, a flicker of fear flashing through her heart. But the thought of becoming the future Mrs. Winslow gave her a surge of confidence. "I'd advise you not to do anything stupid. If I go down, I'm dragging you with me!"
Before Liana could fire back, Macy hung up the phone.
Liana stood rooted to the spot, the phone still pressed to her ear, completely paralyzed.
It took a long moment for her to snap back to reality. With a violent shriek, she hurled her phone at the opposite wall.
It hit with a sickening crack, the screen splintering before sliding down to the carpet.
She stood there, her chest heaving, completely oblivious to the fact that her towel had slipped halfway down her shoulder.
"Macy! You miserable bitch. A cheap fake trying to threaten me? Just you wait!"
...
On the other side of the line, as soon as Macy hung up, she pulled up Jude's phone number.
Her finger hovered over the call button. She hesitated for a second.
She knew full well that Liana had dirt on her.
But so what?
As long as she could marry Jude Winslow, all of this would be worth it.
Once they were married, she would find a way to make him accept her.
Even if the truth came out later, what could they do?
As long as she had a Winslow heir, a portion of the Winslow fortune would belong to her.
Her demands weren't even that high. She just wanted enough money to live luxuriously for the rest of her life.
With that thought fueling her, Macy placed the call. "Hello, Jude? Where are you? I'd like to see you. I have something important to talk about..."
Jude's deep, gentle voice echoed through the speaker. "I'm in San Francisco right now. Is something wrong?"
"Um, I'm willing to fulfill the engagement. I want to marry you... Maybe we could meet up and talk about it?"
"Alright. I'll come find you as soon as I'm back in Northampton."
"Okay! See you soon, Jude."
...
Back in Hudson's office.
Jude ended the call and looked up to find everyone staring at him.
Gavin leaned back on the sofa, slowly lifting his teacup to take a sip, acting as though he hadn't just witnessed the explosive confrontation.
Grant, meanwhile, shrunk back into the cushions. He leaned toward Sebastian and whispered, "What just happened? Why is Finnian so pissed off?"
Sebastian kept his voice equally low. "Why do you care? Stop asking questions."
Grant pouted but kept his mouth shut.
Jude slowly sat back down on the sofa.
In truth, he didn't care.
Did it really matter who he married?
Over the past few years, his family had been relentlessly pressuring him to settle down.
His grandfather's health was deteriorating by the day, constantly talking about wanting to see Jude start a family and hold a great-grandchild.
For years, Jude had used the excuse that 'Evangeline was still missing' to deflect their demands.
But now that she was back, using that excuse would look ridiculous.
If Evangeline wanted to marry him, then he would marry her.
...
Northampton.
By the time Finnian's flight from San Francisco landed in Northampton, the sky was pitch black.
