Although Hudson Lancaster felt a bit confused, he glanced back at the bewildered technician standing near the High-Sensitivity Security Gate. "It must be a machine malfunction. Have someone check it out."
"Yes, Boss," the technician replied quickly.
Nora Reed looked back as Hudson held her hand and led her straight through the security gates.
"What happened to the machine just now?"
"The sensitivity might be set too high."
Hudson chuckled softly. "We just replaced a batch of equipment, and the parameters haven't been optimized yet."
Nora nodded, not entirely understanding but not overthinking it either.
The two walked down the corridor and returned to his office. The insulated bag was still on the coffee table. Because the food was well-wrapped, a thin layer of steam rose when she opened the containers.
Roast lamb, butternut squash soup, beef stew, and seafood chowder were laid out one by one on the table.
"Today is the last day. Tomorrow my mentor will come over to keep an eye on things. Where do you want to go for the next few days, Honey?"
"Professor Campbell is coming?"
Nora's dark eyes lit up, though she felt a bit guilty. "Making him stay here to watch the place while we go out and play... Is that okay?"
Hudson laughed. "Don't worry, the Professor has been begging for this!"
Nora couldn't help but smile. Just as she was about to speak, Hudson's phone vibrated on the coffee table.
He glanced down at the caller ID—Douglas Campbell.
"Look, Honey. Speak of the devil."
Hudson smiled and swiped to answer. Professor Campbell's booming voice immediately blasted through the speaker. "I'm at the gate of your research facility! What's going on here? Your security is tighter than ever! They held me up for five minutes and refused to let me in. Do you have to come pick me up personally?"
Hudson paused in surprise, then laughed. "Professor, didn't you say you were arriving tomorrow? Why are you here today?"
"I was worried you wouldn't be able to coax your wife properly, so I rushed through my work and came right over..."
"I'll have Arthur pick you up."
"Hurry up! It's freezing out here. I'm about to turn into a popsicle!"
Hudson agreed, hung up, and turned to Arthur. "Go to the main gate and bring the Professor in."
"Thank you, thank you." Douglas took a sip of the soup, then glanced at Hudson. "Kid, how's the progress on the Vanguard TBM Chip development?"
Hudson leaned back comfortably, crossing his long legs. "The architecture design is finished, and we've run the core algorithms a few times, but we're still stuck on some key nodes."
"Where exactly?"
"Balancing processing frequency and power consumption. The current solution's precision and stability aren't enough. If we want to meet the project's standards, we need to improve by at least an entire magnitude."
Douglas frowned deeply. "A whole magnitude? That's not going to be easy."
Hudson nodded. "It's not. That's why I've been looking into a new type of semiconductor material. There's some preliminary research abroad, but it's not fully mature yet. If we can take the lead in that direction, we might bypass the current architectural bottlenecks."
Douglas pressed his lips together. His eyes lost focus for a moment, and after a long silence, he let out a heavy sigh. "If only Felix Vaughn were here," he murmured.
Hudson raised an eyebrow. "Felix Vaughn?"
Douglas nodded. "Her understanding of chip development was unprecedented..."
He paused, a cold edge creeping into his voice. "That gold digger Henry Fairchild only became the head of the Fairchild Family by riding her coattails... If it weren't for him, Felix would be a national treasure in science today. Henry is a sinner who should face the ultimate penalty!"
