The office door was ajar, and the sound of typing and rustling papers drifted out.
Jude knocked twice and pushed the door open.
The office was a mess.
Douglas Campbell sat behind the desk, surrounded by blueprints and files, a cold cup of tea at his elbow.
He was reviewing a data report through his reading glasses. Hearing their footsteps, he looked up. His gaze rested on Jude for a second before sliding to Finnian, and he let out a cold snort.
Finnian skipped the pleasantries. His eyes swept the office before glancing toward the break room.
"Where is Nora?"
Douglas shot him a look of disgust. "If Hudson heard you ask for his wife the second you opened your mouth, he'd kick you out."
Finnian tightened his jaw. "I need to see her for an important matter."
"I don't know!"
Seeing an argument brewing, Jude quickly intervened. "Professor, where is Hudson?"
"Out of the country." Douglas threw his pen onto the desk, grinding his teeth. "He dumped this giant mess on me and went on vacation with his wife."
Finnian's brow furrowed tightly. "Out of the country? Where?"
"How would I know?" Douglas picked up his tea. "That kid didn't even tell me. He just asked me to watch the facility while he took his wife out to play for a few days."
As he spoke, he noticed Finnian's face turn pale. Remembering how he had rudely hung up on him earlier, Douglas felt a twinge of guilt. He cleared his throat, his tone softening slightly. "Well... if it's really urgent, just call him."
Finnian immediately pulled out his phone and dialed Hudson's number.
The mechanical female voice echoed from the speaker: "Hello, the subscriber you dialed is powered off..."
Refusing to give up, he dialed again.
The same message played.
He was a step too late!
They had already boarded!
...
The Bahamas.
It was past eight in the evening when Hudson and Nora arrived.
Because they had called ahead, a local team was waiting to pick them up. Someone immediately handed Arthur the keys to one of Hudson's beachfront villas.
"Arthur, we've cleaned the rooms and changed all the bedding exactly as you requested..."
Arthur took the car keys and villa keys with a blank expression, waving his hand. "Alright, you can go now."
"Yes, Arthur!"
Since the villa didn't have groceries stocked, the group ate at a nearby restaurant before driving over.
"Did you buy this villa? It's gorgeous..."
Nora pushed the door open, looking around the spotless, beautifully maintained house in awe.
Finnian took a deep breath, seemingly doing everything in his power to control his emotions. "Where are you? I have something crucial to confirm with you."
Hudson raised an eyebrow, tapping his finger lightly on his phone case. "The Bahamas."
"Send me the address. I'll be there first thing tomorrow morning."
"What's the rush?"
"We'll talk when I see you."
"Fine."
After hanging up, Hudson frowned, instinctively glancing out the window.
It was pitch black outside. Only the distant lights of the resort shimmered on the crests of the waves, breaking into liquid gold.
Everything felt quiet and peaceful.
What was going on with Finnian?
Only two things could make him this desperate.
One was Felix Vaughn.
The other was... Evangeline Fairchild.
Hudson's frown deepened.
Could it be...
