Liana violently yanked her arm away. "Get out! I don't want to look at you!"
The sudden force sent Martha stumbling backward. Her foot slipped on a piece of jagged porcelain, and as she braced her fall, her palm slammed directly onto a sharp shard. The ceramic sliced her palm open in a deep, bloody gash.
Martha gasped at the searing pain, but she bit her lip to swallow her cry. Cradling her bleeding hand, she looked up at Liana. "Liana, please calm down. The more chaotic things get, the less you should be wallowing in self-pity."
Liana glared at her with venomous eyes. "Shut up!"
"You're just a maid! Who gave you the right to lecture me?" Liana pointed at the door, her voice shrill. "Get the hell out!"
Martha cradled her injured hand, her lips parting as if to speak, but she swallowed the words.
Pushing herself off the floor, she turned and walked out, casting worried glances over her shoulder until the door clicked shut behind her.
Before she even took a step down the hall, another deafening crash echoed from inside.
Martha stood in the corridor, staring down at the deep gash on her palm, blood steadily oozing from the wound. Her eyes grew red, but she simply wiped at her face with her sleeve and hurried downstairs.
Back in the main hall, the festive atmosphere carried on, completely oblivious to the drama unfolding above.
When Martha returned through the side door carrying a fresh pot of coffee, Matriarch Fairchild glanced her way, her eyes lingering for a fraction of a second on the makeshift bandage wrapped around Martha’s hand.
"What happened to your hand?"
Martha quickly hid it behind her back. "It's nothing, Ma'am. Just a small scrape."
The Matriarch didn't press the issue, offering only a curt nod before looking away.
Nora’s gaze also fell on the maid. If her memory served her right, this woman was Liana’s shadow...
Nora looked away, taking a sip from her porcelain cup, her finger tracing the delicate rim.
She could easily guess the tantrum playing out upstairs.
But frankly, she didn't care.
As long as Liana didn't cross any boundaries, they could exist in parallel universes.
In the past, Liana's hostility stemmed from ignorance.
But now that the truth was out, if Liana tried to pull another stunt, Nora wouldn't show an ounce of mercy.
Her thoughts were interrupted by heavy footsteps at the entrance.
Henry Fairchild strode in, wearing a dark gray cashmere coat that still carried the winter chill. A broad smile stretched across his face. "Evie, Hudson, Happy New Year!"
He reached into his pocket, pulled out a thick envelope stuffed with cash, and handed it directly to Nora. "Here you go. A little New Year's gift."
"Thanks, Dad."
