The night was heavy and dark.
Inside the presidential suite of the five-star hotel, Nora had already drifted into a deep sleep.
Hudson had just stepped out of the bathroom when the phone on the coffee table buzzed.
He glanced at the screen.
Jude Winslow.
Hudson's movements faltered. He instinctively glanced toward the bedroom.
The bedside lamp was still on, casting a soft, warm halo across the dark bedsheets.
Nora was lying on her side, wrapped tightly in the blankets, with only her messy hair and the pink tip of one ear visible.
Her breathing was soft and even. She was completely fast asleep.
He slid his finger across the screen to answer, pushed open the glass door to the sunroom, and stepped outside, pulling the door shut to completely seal out the noise.
"Jude..."
"I just asked my grandfather," Jude got straight to the point without any preamble. "The Ivory Pill was indeed with the Winslows in the past, but he already used it."
Hudson's grip on his phone tightened fiercely.
He looked down, staring at the scattered lights at the end of the street below. It took him several seconds to find his voice. "...Used it?"
"Yeah. My grandfather said he used it when my great-grandfather fell gravely ill. It's been gone for decades."
Jude paused. "Hudson, tell me the truth. Why are you looking for the Ivory Pill?"
The winter wind howled between the skyscrapers. Even though he was shielded by the glass, Hudson felt an icy chill seep into his bones.
"...I was poisoned," Hudson replied, his tone chillingly flat, void of any emotion. "It happened two years ago. I haven't been able to find the antidote. I've dragged it out until now, but my time is running out. The Ivory Pill is the only cure."
The other end of the line went dead silent.
Jude's breathing hitched. When he finally spoke, his voice was heavy. "How long do you have?"
"Liam Harrison says... two months at most."
Jude's fingers clenched into a fist. "Then what are you..."
"Jude," Hudson cut him off, his voice dropping even lower. "If I really can't make it, there's something I need to entrust to you."
Jude's Adam's apple bobbed. He wanted to say something but swallowed the words instead. "...Tell me."
Hudson glanced through the glass door toward the bedroom. Nora hadn't moved. She was still curled up in the blankets, her sleeping face peaceful.
He looked away, his voice turning somber. "Jude, if... I'm saying if, I die... I need you to look after Nora for me."
"Hudson..."
"You don't have to give me an answer now. Just keep it in mind."
Without giving Jude another chance to speak, Hudson hung up.
The phone screen went black. Hudson stared at it for a moment before lifting his gaze to the heavy, oppressive night sky.
