Marcus's current living room was cramped, but it was kept decently clean.
"Please, have a seat. I'll make some tea."
Marcus ushered them to sit, then turned to dig through the cabinets. He found two clean cups and clumsily started brewing the tea.
Watching him scramble around, Nora felt a wave of surrealism.
Just a few years ago, he used to sit at the head of the Reed family villa, surrounded by servants, never having to lift a finger to pour his own tea.
Now, he was doing everything himself.
Marcus placed the two hot cups of tea in front of them and sat on a small armchair to the side, rubbing his knees, looking entirely out of place in his own home.
"Nora, about everything that happened... I heard."
He looked down and sighed heavily. "I always thought Penelope was just playing the wicked stepmother routine, trying to prove she loved Jade as much as you... I had no idea she..."
"Marcus... none of this is your fault."
Nora set down her teacup. "I'll never forget how good you were to me."
All those years in the Reed family, Marcus was the only one who treated her well. Thanks to him, her life hadn't been entirely unbearable.
To keep Marcus in the dark, Penelope maintained a flawless facade. Nora's food and clothes were never lacking.
But behind closed doors, she suffered in silence.
If Jade wanted something, Nora wasn't even allowed to look at it.
Even when she went to college, it was Marcus who secretly slipped her money for tuition and living expenses.
Otherwise, she would have never graduated.
Marcus's eyes reddened. He quickly lowered his head, wiping away a tear.
"Marcus, I want to send Xavier abroad to study. What do you think?"
"Study abroad?" Marcus looked up, visibly troubled. "Well..."
Sensing his hesitation, Nora immediately added, "I'll cover his tuition and living expenses. I'll pay for everything until he graduates college."
"Thank you. Thank you so much..."
Marcus broke down in tears of gratitude.
Lately, what broke his heart the most was seeing Xavier suffer.
Every time the boy came home covered in bruises, it killed him inside.
But he knew that in his current state, he had neither the power nor the means to protect his son.
