["Someone came looking for me today! Asking around everywhere! It's over! Did that woman get rescued and come back for the child? Or did the Volkovs come looking? I couldn't risk it, so I ran... But I never expected that by running, I'd meet my Mr. Right! He said his name was Arnold Vance. He didn't mind that I had a child, and he had a car and a house. I think I've struck gold..."]
The next large chunk of text detailed exactly how satisfied she was with Arnold. Disgusted, Nora Reed tossed the diary to Hudson Lancaster to read the rest.
Hudson flipped through the pages quickly, scanning the remaining content before tossing the notebook aside. "She didn't mention your mother again after that."
Nora pressed her lips together, glancing at the discarded diary. "Do you think... the people looking for Penelope Reed back then were sent by my mother, or were they the Volkovs?"
"Most likely the latter."
Hudson pulled her into his arms. "If Penelope had actually gone to claim a reward, the ending would have been entirely different."
Nora rested her head against his chest, listening to his strong, steady heartbeat. "Who exactly are the Volkovs? Why did they kidnap my mother and me?"
"I'm still looking into it. Don't worry, the second I have answers, I'll tell you."
Nora fell silent.
Deep down, she knew that if someone with Hudson's resources hadn't found anything after all this time, a massive shadow organization had to be involved.
Not to mention, investigating a cold case from over twenty years ago was never going to be easy.
Seeing Nora lay quietly against his chest for a long while, Hudson looked down and gently tapped the tip of her nose. "What's wrong? What are you thinking about?"
"Nothing really..." Nora murmured, her voice slightly muffled.
Hudson chuckled softly, the deep vibration in his chest rumbling with a magnetic appeal. "Are you thinking about trying to find your mother? Wanting to know what really happened back then?"
Nora immediately pulled back from his embrace, looking up at him in absolute disbelief.
Sometimes she seriously suspected Hudson was a mind reader.
How could he have guessed that so perfectly?
Seeing her eyes shining with surprise, the corners of Hudson's mouth curved upward. "Patience. Hunter Hamilton has already cracked the Vanguard Microchips, but it still requires the V-Iris Protocol. I'm guessing your mother used your iris data to secure it. So, you'll need to come with me to the Lancaster Research Lab tomorrow."
Nora nodded eagerly. "Okay, I'll go with you."
Just as the words left her mouth, a knock sounded at the door.
"Madam, the medicine is ready."
Nora suddenly remembered that today was a dose day.
Ever since Dr. Silas Vane had changed the prescription from once every three days to once a week, her memory regarding it had slipped. If Arthur hadn't shown up with it, she might have completely forgotten.
