"Put... put me down, I can walk by myself." She pushed against his chest, her cheeks burning with an embarrassing heat.
Seeing that they had already reached the bedroom and Hudson was making a beeline for the bathroom, Nora quickly added, "I'll wash up myself!"
"We'll wash together, to save water!"
"No way!"
Nora squirmed out of Hudson's grip, hopped down, and bolted into the bathroom, swiftly locking the door behind her.
Hudson stared at her retreating figure, unable to suppress the smile tugging at his lips.
He looked down at himself and shook his head in helpless amusement.
Was this medicine supposed to be a cure, or an aphrodisiac?
Did that old hermit grab the wrong herbs?
Meanwhile, the sound of running water echoed from inside the bathroom. Hudson stood right outside the door, feeling an undeniable heat rising in his blood.
He instinctively reached into his pocket, only to find it empty, suddenly remembering he had quit smoking a while ago.
There wasn't a single lighter in the house, let alone a cigarette.
Yet, an intoxicating, subtle fragrance wafted through the crack of the bathroom door, plucking at his nerves like invisible fingers.
Hudson leaned against the wall, his gaze fixed on the frosted glass door. A thin layer of condensation had formed on the glass, blurring the silhouette moving gracefully behind it.
He felt like a lovesick teenager, standing outside his crush's bathroom, his heart racing out of control just being separated by a single door.
He glanced at the door again, finally giving in as he stepped forward and knocked twice. "Honey, aren't you cold showering alone? Want me to come in and keep you company?"
Nora remained silent.
"I'm not cold... don't you dare come in."
Hudson rubbed his nose and stubbornly knocked again. "Do you have enough towels? Should I hand you one?"
"...I have enough."
"What about shampoo? Are you out?"
"..."
Hudson leaned against the doorframe, listening to the cascading water. He felt like his wife's signature scent was impossible to shake off, slipping through the door's seams, invading his senses, and wrapping tighter around him with every breath.
Half an hour later, the bathroom door finally clicked open.
Nora stepped out wrapped in a thick robe, her hair still wet. Drops of water trailed down the ends of her hair, blooming into small dark patches on the shoulders of the robe.
Steam rolled out of the bathroom behind her, cloaking her in a hazy white mist, her cheeks flushed a delicate pink from the heat.
She barely took a step before a warm, firm hand closed over the back of her neck.
