Nora and Hudson instinctively exchanged a look.
Now they knew exactly where Vincent and Phoebe got their penchant for grand entrances.
It was a family tradition.
Hudson raised an eyebrow. "That's strange... If your father didn't do anything wrong back then, why would he be so terrified of seeing Alastair Vaughn? Sounds like a guilty conscience."
Finnian pressed his lips tightly together, staying silent.
Hudson, predictably, had no intention of letting him off the hook. "Do you still believe Nora and your mother's disappearance had nothing to do with Henry Fairchild?"
"I... I don't know."
Hudson chuckled softly. "I think you're a decent guy, so I'll let you in on something..."
Relieved that Hudson was changing the subject, Finnian quickly asked, "What is it?"
Hudson gave a light laugh, clearing his throat. "There's an opportunity staring you right in the face. Do you want it, or not?"
"What opportunity?"
Hudson leaned comfortably in his seat, slowly unwrapping a mint and popping it into his mouth. "Taking control of the family, of course."
Finnian was speechless.
He sat in silence for a few seconds, staring at Hudson's deadpan expression in the rearview mirror. "...Are you serious?"
"Why? Are you planning to be the Fairchild heir apparent for the rest of your life?" Hudson crushed the mint between his teeth, the sharp crack echoing in the quiet car. "You're thirty-two, right? No urge to take the throne?"
The vein at Finnian's temple throbbed.
He took a deep breath, forcing down the sudden spike of irritation from having his sore spot poked. "What kind of terrible advice is that? My father is in his prime. I—"
"Your father is in his prime, and you're not?" Hudson cut him off effortlessly. "I took over the Lancaster Group when I was twenty. You're thirty-two and still playing the dutiful prince. Aren't you embarrassed?"
"..."
Was that even the right context to use the word "embarrassed"?
Seeing Finnian rendered silent, Hudson continued coolly, "Ask yourself honestly. With your father in his current state of mind, if you sit around waiting for him to voluntarily step down, how long do you think that'll take?"
Finnian didn't answer, but his brow furrowed deeply.
Taking his silence as agreement, Hudson pushed further. "Besides, you're not the only son in the Fairchild Family. You have plenty of younger brothers. You might not be in a rush, but trust me, they are."
Finnian's fingers went completely still.
Hudson knew from the look on his face that he had hit the mark.
He leaned back lazily. "Whenever you figure it out, let me know. I'll give you a hand."
He paused, adding, "And don't worry about the Vaughn Family. They'll undoubtedly back the exact same play."
Finnian was at a loss for words.
