Crystal chandeliers threw glitter across the room. Waiters weaved through the crowd with silver trays.
The guests tonight were either powerful alphas with their mates or top stars. Reporters with cameras moved around, eager to catch every highlight.
As the spokesperson, Violet was busy mingling with the brand executives, wine glass in hand.
When she saw me, she smiled and pushed through the crowd to pull me into the group. “Let me introduce you–this is Deanna. She’s a director at Mistbane Group and my best friend.”
Milo gave me a polite smile. His earlier arrogance was all gone.
“Hello, Ms. Wiley.”
“Hi,” I said and gave him a polite nod.
Milo said, “Sorry about before. I didn’t realize you knew Mr. Eaton, and I turned you away. I hope you didn’t mind.”
Hearing Luis’s name made me freeze for a second.
“Muses moving into our mall is a real coup for us,” I replied.
Suddenly, Milo waved at someone across the room like an old friend. “Long time no see, Jake. You haven’t answered my drink invites.”
Jake clapped him on the shoulder in the same casual way.
Milo didn’t know Jake and I had history. He introduced me.
“This is Ms. Wiley. Muses is opening in the mall run by her company.”
Then his gaze flicked between Jake and me, like he’d found something funny. “Wow, you two look like a couple–matching gray attire.”
Jake looked at me right away. His eyes darkened with hidden emotions.

Violet took a step in front of me; without showing it, she blocked Jake’s view.
From my angle I even saw her roll her eyes.
1 let out a small amused smile.
At that moment, one of the brand executives raised his glass.
“Let’s toast for tonight.”
Then, Jake grabbed a bottle of champagne and handed it straight to me.

“You can’t drink red wine. Drink this.”
Violet ground her teeth and mouthed at me. “That’s a little too late for that, isn’t it? I’d
pass.”
I glanced at the red wine and didn’t take it.
Instead, I lifted the champagne and took a tiny, symbolic sip. Everyone who knows me also knows that red wine makes my skin itch if I drink too much.
A little won’t hurt.
Jake frowned and dropped his voice.
“Deanna, you don’t have to hurt yourself just to spite me.”
I was about to argue back when a sudden commotion rose at the entrance. Flashbulbs went off in rapid bursts–some important guest must have arrived.
I lifted my head, my eyes cutting through the crowd and the blinding lights.
That familiar, striking man walked in with his usual lazy stride, surrounded by people.
The moment Luis appeared, the whole room went silent. Every werewolf there felt the weight of his presence.
Executives from Muses and the city elite hurriedly moved forward to greet him.
“Mr. Eaton, your assistant told us you couldn’t make it tonight. What an honor to have you here for our grand opening!”
Luis gave a slight nod. He didn’t even bother with a polite smile.
His eyes swept across the room and landed on me. But just as quickly, he looked away like

nothing had happened.

Violet tugged on my sleeve, ready to say something, but I cut her off. “Violet, I’m going to grab some food.”
The buffet table wasn’t crowded. I picked up a plate and reached for a slice of cake to fill my stomach.
I had no idea when, but Jake showed up, sticking to me like a shadow.
He held out a blueberry cake, his tone flattering.
“It’s your favorite. Blueberry cake.”
I glanced at it, ignored him, and grabbed a cookie instead.
Jake was becoming unbearable.
Over the last few weeks, he’d sent me more messages than he had in the five years we were together.
Every time from a different number. I deleted them again and again.
But with his wealth, he could buy as many numbers as he wanted.
Eventually, I got tired of deleting them.
I even thought about changing my phone number.
But then I realized—with his resources, he’d still be able to track me down.
“Jake, stop following me. You’re acting nothing like an Alpha.”
