Then I quickly pushed that thought away.

Luis couldn’t possibly know what this bracelet meant. Yesterday, he was ready to throw it away when I didn’t want it.

He must’ve bought it by chance.

After dinner with Zelena, I went home with mixed feelings.

When I opened the door, I froze. Luis was lying lazily on the couch. He wore a gray shirt and black pants. One arm was behind his head; the other rested on his forehead. His long legs crossed casually at the edge of the couch.

He heard the door open and slowly lifted his eyes to look at me.

I stood petrified, caught off guard, our eyes meeting.

The room fell silent. The air felt frozen between us. None of us said anything.

The bedroom lights were off; only a faint silver glow from the moon spilled in from the balcony.

I couldn’t see his face clearly, but his burning gaze pinned me in place. My feet refused to

move.

After a long time, Luis sat up lazily, leaning against the couch.

I snapped back to the present and quickly flipped on the light with a sharp click.

Luis raised an eyebrow. “Piggy, you’ve gotten bold. Ignoring my calls and vanishing without a word?”

After changing my shoes, I tried to slip past him and escape to my room. But as I walked by, his hand suddenly reached out and caught my fingers.

arms.

“Luis!” I snapped, frustrated.

I blinked and rebuked stubbornly. “And what makes you think that?”

Luis rose slowly to his feet, his tall frame radiating a quiet pressure that made the air heavy.

He tapped his chest, right over his heart. “Right here. I can see it clearly.”

“Now tell me,” he said with that lazy confidence, “who made my Piggy upset? I’ll deal with him for you.”

I looked down, avoiding his burning gaze, refusing to answer.

Luis reached out and pinched my cheek.

“Luis!” I slapped his hand away. “Stop touching me all the time!”

He smirked. “Oh, yeah? Yesterday it was fine. Today it’s not? Ms. Wiley, you’re quite the unpredictable woman.”

“Alright, fine. I won’t touch you,” he said with a teasing glint in his eyes. “I’ll be generous. How about you touch me instead?”

Then he leaned down and pressed my hand against his face.

For a second, my breath hitched. But then, a thought flashed through my mind—had this same hand touched his childhood sweetheart, too?

“Nothing,” I muttered. “It’s none of your business.”

“Ms. Wiley,” he said with a sigh, “How am I supposed to cheer you up if you won’t even tell me what’s wrong?”

I turned my head slightly and just looked at him quietly.

He was so close that I could see the curve of his lashes, the faint warmth in his eyes.

“Why … ” I whispered, “Why do you even want to cheer me up?”

He smiled faintly. “Because if I don’t, my little Piggy will hold a grudge. You’ll ignore my calls, vanish for a few days, and protest in various adorable ways.”

His tone was playful and light, yet I couldn’t tell if he was being serious or just sweet–talking me again.

Every time I was with him, I always ended up losing the argument.

When Luis got mad, he could drive anyone crazy.
