I lifted my eyes, stayed silent for a moment, then said, “I told you I would never be mad at you.”
“But you’re cold to me. You don’t smile. You feed me, and then you work. The number of times you talked to me today…”
She counted carefully on her fingers. “Not more than ten sentences.”
Her voice was soft, a cautious little complaint.
I sat down, stared straight at her, and brushed the hair at her temple behind her ear. “I’m only mad at myself.”
Deanna blinked. “Why?”
I gripped her hand tight, gave a self–mocking smile, a little bitter.
Everyone thinks that as the Mooncrown Pack’s Alpha, I’m untouchable, unbreakable.
But I’m not strong at all.
I’m scared.
Rather than being angry that you didn’t take care of your body, I’m angry that I didn’t protect you well enough.
“Deanna.”
I pulled her into my arms, a little too hard, pressed my face into the slender curve of her neck, breathed her in, felt her warmth.
Then, in a tone almost pleading and humble, I said, “If I’m first in your heart, don’t take risks for anyone else again.
“Because if this happens again, I don’t know if I can bear it.”
Deanna’s POV:
I froze.

A tight, aching sting bloomed in my chest–because of that nearly humble tone.

After a while, I slid my hand to the back of his head, my fingers threading into his hair.
Right then-
A knock sounded at the door. Two wolf guards stood at the threshold.
Luis eased back, sitting loosely upright.
One guard reported, “Alpha, Luna’s friend, Maggie–once she heard Luna had awakened, she has been waiting at the door an entire day and night. She asks to see Luna.”
I looked straight at him. “You don’t like Maggie, do you?”
His face barely shifted. “I don’t like anyone who hurts you.”
In this matter, Maggie wasn’t wrong.
I wasn’t wrong.
The wrong one was the person who set the trap.
But I also knew-
If something had happened to me, the one who’d suffer most would be Luis.
I understood what he meant.
He wanted me to be a little selfish.
I told the guard, “Tell her to rest. I’m awake. When I’m better and free, I’ll see her.”
The guard withdrew.
Quiet returned.
I tugged Luis’s big hand, laced my fingers through his, ten interlocking ten, and softened my voice.
“I know saving people like that was saintly and reckless. I know how worried you were. I won’t do it again–so don’t be angry anymore, okay?”
Luis lowered his head and slowly squeezed my hand back a bit too hard.

I watched his handsome brows unknit. I knew he’d cooled off.
I’ll admit I was a little calculating–leaning on his love to be willful.
I rested my head against his chest, listening to his heartbeat–heavy, steady.
How lucky that the man I love is my fated mate.
After a while, I tipped my face up in his arms and held his gaze. “Luis.”
He looked down. “Mm?”
