Chapter 55 Deanna Won’t Come Back
Chapter 55 Deanna Won’t Come Back
Jake’s POV:
I looked at Terence, who was getting worked up.
For the first time, I didn’t argue with him. I just gave a bitter smile.
It wasn’t just the kidnapping. What if those thugs had violated her?
I couldn’t say it out loud.
The guilt was heavy on me.
But deep down, I felt like Deanna’s body was already tainted.
It took everything in me to force myself not to care about it.

Terence’s face grew awkward after he blurted that out. “Jake, if you don’t care about Deanna anymore, and she wants to break up, maybe you should just let her go.”
I snapped, my voice low and rough. “Do I get to decide that, or do you all get to decide that for me?” Inside, I felt hollow, like something had been ripped out.
Terence froze, then asked again.
“If you really care about Deanna, then what about Peggie? Everyone thinks you care about her more. Do you want both women at the same time?”
I grabbed the bottle of whiskey and downed it in one shot.
“Peggie is just responsible. Years ago, my mom forced her to leave me. She got depressed, and that’s why her health broke down. If I didn’t take care of her, she would have died.”
“Then keep taking care of Peggie,” Terence raised his voice.
“But let Deanna go! Any woman would lose it if her fiancé stayed with another woman while she was kidnapped. Deanna’s breakup this time–she means it.”
“No. I can’t.” I slammed the glass on the bar, the sound heavy and dull.
Terence sighed. “Jake, do you even love Deanna?”
Love?
The word sat in my mind for a long time. Finally, I muttered, “Deanna’s been with me for a long time. I don’t need to love her; I don’t need to work hard to understand her. She just loves me anyway. She warms me, cares for me, and takes care of me. A woman like that is perfect to be my girlfriend. Maybe even my wife.”
“Then what is it, Jake? Do you love her, or not?” Terence pressed.
The words stuck in my throat. I couldn’t force a single one out.

The truth was, I’d never really thought about it.
In the beginning. Deanna was the one chasing me.

She was beautiful, and she gave me all her time, all her attention. She made me her whole world. Why wouldn’t I accept her?
But somewhere along the way, I just got used to her being there.
Later, when she showed her other side–when she got moody, jealous, and stopped being so obedient–I started getting annoyed.
And I never once thought it was my fault.
Every man wants a girlfriend who understands him, not one who stirs up trouble and won’t listen.
I stayed quiet for a long time, so Terence changed the question.
“Do you love Peggie?”
“She’s very important to me,” I answered without hesitation.
“And if Peggie gets better one day and wants to leave you, would you let her go?”
“I’ve always hoped she would get better so she could live her own life.” That was the truth.
Terence looked at me, as if he wanted to say more, but in the end he only sighed. “I think I get it now. Jake, give it up. Deanna’s not coming back.”
“Why?” I shot my head up.
I didn’t even care about whether she was innocent.
“How could she not come back? She loved me for five years. She swore before Nyra she’d love me for life. She’s just mad right now.”
I grabbed Terence’s arm. “Tell me, what can I do to win her back?”
“It’s tough.” He shook his head, then asked, “When Deanna was kidnapped, did anything happen?”
The mention of that made my hand tighten on the glass until it shattered.
My mind told me that maybe parts of that kidnapping weren’t real.
But when I saw those marks on her neck, I wasn’t sure anymore.
Could Deanna use something like that just to get back at me?
I shoved
away the thoughts and said in a low voice, “Just tell me how to win a woman back.”
Terence rolled his eyes. “What do you think I am, some kind of miracle worker? I can’t make a woman who’s already given up fall for you again.”
He paused, then thought it through seriously. “But maybe, you could try softening up. All these years, you’ve always been in control, standing above her. If you lower yourself, apologize, and treat her gently, maybe–just maybe–you’ll have a chance.”
Soften up? The thought made me frown. It didn’t sit right with me, but I still tucked his words away in my mind.

When I pushed back my chair and stood, my legs felt weak. Terence reached out to steady me, but i waved him off.
As soon as I stepped out of the private room, the elevator doors across the hall slid open with a chime.
