(Author’s POV)
"Young master~ .... Something terrible had happened," Chris’s trembling voice came from the other side.
Fabian was already irritated because of Alaric and Dion’s presence, and then there was this Chris Shadow, who had been snitching on him to his grandfather. Hearing his voice, Fabian lost his temper and yelled, "I know what has happened. Can’t you handle the situation with the elders on your own for a while? Aren’t you the capable Chris Shadow, huhh?"
"Young master, it is not that. It’s~ ...," Chris spoke, his voice urgent.
"Then what. Are those elders bullying you? Saying they will drink your or something?" Fabian snapped. "Right now, I am doing something important, and it will take me a while. Handle them on your own." He instructed and was about to cut the call, but before he did, Chris told him, "It’s about the master."
’Master? As in grandfather?’ Fabian creased his brows. "What about my grandfather?"
"He~ ... he~ .... He was on his way to Esteria, but~ ...." There was a slight pause. With a choking voice, Chris uttered, "The plane~ .... it crashe~d."
For a few moments, Fabian couldn’t process the words that came out of Chris’s mouth. His mind went completely blank. Then a sudden realisation dawned on him, turning his face ashen. "What did you just say? How can that be~ .... how is that possible? You~ .... Did Mr. Larson tell you to~ ... He was going to come the day after tomorrow."
"Young Master, nothing I am saying is untrue. I just got the news five minutes ago~ ...." Chris said, his voice strained. He was telling Fabian about what he knew about the accident, but Fabian wasn’t listening to any of it. A sharp, high pitched ringing sound reverberated in his ears. He couldn’t hear anything past the tinnitus. He felt like the land beneath him had been dismantled. He asked in a stammering voice, "Where~ ... where is he?"
"The rescue operation is still going on. I am on my way to the location. I will send it to you," Chris spoke, and the next second Fabian’s phone buzzed with the message.
Fabian disconnected the call as he dashed towards the parking lot with only one thought in his mind, ’I need to be by his side.’ After all, the person who saved him when he was five, his only family in the entire world, his grandfather. His life was in danger.
Igniting the engine, he glanced at the campus area briefly and murmured, "I am sorry, Myra. I will come for you after making sure that my grandfather is safe."
After that, he raced out of the campus at full speed.
Around an hour or so later, Fabian arrived at the location. He pulled over his car and hurtled out towards the scene. Needless to say, the sight was a chaotic mess.
Siren sounds were flaring in the air, mixed with the pungent, acrid smell of smoke, burning jet fuel and hot metal. The scattered debris of the plane owned by the Larson Group, more than half of which had turned to ashes. For Fabian, there was no denying it. All that was happening wasn’t some prank or joke, but reality. The proof was right in front of him. Apart from Jacob, no one could fly in that plane, which was now burning to dust.
With shaky legs, he walked some more. Chris spotted him from a distance and came running towards him, "Young master, you are finally here."
Fabian tried to sound calm as he asked, "What’s the update? Did they~ ... did they find him yet?"
"The operation is still underway. So far, four bodies have been found, out of which only one~ ... one victim has managed to survive. The others, their condition~ .... It will need a DNA test to confirm their identities. They all have been sent to the hospital," Chris informed him, his voice strained. "The accident happened near the sea, so the rescue team is checking the waters as well."
Fabian only nodded, his eyes transfixed at the sea. Chris patted his back and said comfortingly, "I am sure Chairman Larson is going to be safe. He is the Vampire king after all." The last sentence, he said it so that only Fabian could hear.
In the middle of their conversation, a screaky voice interrupted them, "Fabian~ ... you have arrived. Ohh my~ .... Look at you. You seem so gaunt and pale," the person said, their voice laced with worry.
Seeing the intruder, Fabian’s eyes turned cold as he asked, "Elder Brian Tape, why are you here?"
"What are you saying? How can I not be here? When such a catastrophic thing has happened to our King," the one named Brian said. "You know how aghast I felt after hearing the devastating news."
Fabian nodded and then, without looking at either of the two elders, made his way towards the government officers. Chris shifted his attention towards them and said, "Elder Richards, Elder Tape, the rescue operation will take time. Why don’t you return back to your residence? I will keep you posted about the progress." His words were polite, but the meaning was crystal clear. He wanted them to leave.
Brian glanced at him, his eyes narrowed, he snapped, "I don’t think there is even a place for someone like you, human, to tell us what to do and what not to. Stay in lane." He gave him such a murderous look. Anyone in his place would have cowered and grovelled, but Chris Shadow merely gave Brian a professional nod and answered curtly, "You are absolutely right, Elder Tape. My apologies if somehow you felt offended by my thoughtlessness. Well then~ ..."
With that, he bowed in his usual manner, turned around and walked away in the direction where Fabian was.
"This ignorant human~ .... who does he think he is. Being by Jacob’s side, he thinks he is above us, the elders. Huhh, preposterous," Brian gritted his teeth as he muttered.
"Brian Tape, rein in your temper. All this chard won’t be for long. Once the confirmation comes, those two filths, I will personally tame their haughtiness," Catherine declared, a vicious smirk made its way to her elegant face.
Though she was nearing her nineties, but she looked no more than a twenty year old. On the other hand, Brian Tape was a sixty two year old vampire, but seemed like he was in his forties.
People who were not of the vampire community would often get confused by why Brian catered to Catherine’s every word. Some even thought he was her sugar daddy. But in reality, she was above him in the Vampire Clan’s hierarchy. Actually, she was the second oldest amongst the Vampires.
"You are right, Elder Catherine. Ohh~ .... I should probably say, My Dear Majesty," Brian murmured only enough for Catherine to hear.
Listening to his words, Catherine’s eyes gleamed with greed and darkness.
