Alpha Ethan’s POV

I dropped the letter onto my desk and stared at it like it might suddenly explain itself.

The words were still fresh in my mind sharp, deliberate, and unsettling poisoning the fragile peace I had been clinging to since morning. The ink seemed darker than it should be, the handwriting confident and intentional. Whoever wrote it knew exactly what they were doing. Worse, they knew me.

I exhaled slowly and pressed the call button on my desk.

“Send the guard on duty to my study,” I ordered.

While I waited, my phone vibrated beside the letter. I glanced at the screen and frowned. It was my office line.

I answered immediately. “Talk to me.”

“Alpha,” my secretary said briskly, tension clear in her voice. “There’s an urgent matter at the company. A few partners are pushing for immediate approval on two new deals. They insist it can’t wait.”

I leaned back slightly, rubbing my temple. Even now, responsibilities pulled at me from every direction.

“Which ones?” I asked.

She listed them one after the other, and I listened carefully, forcing my mind into business mode despite the unease crawling under my skin.

“The first deal approve it,” I said firmly. “The projections are solid, and the risk is minimal. But the second one? Reject it. Tell them we’re not rushing into anything without a full audit.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

“And make it clear to the manager,” I continued, my voice hardening, “that every staff member needs to be kept in check. No shortcuts. No excuses. Let them know I’ll be visiting the company anytime soon unannounced.”

There was a brief pause. “Understood. I’ll pass the message along.”

“Good,” I replied, ending the call.

Almost immediately, there was a knock at the door.

“Enter.” I said.

The door opened, and a guard stepped inside, bowing respectfully. His shoulders were tense, his eyes carefully lowered.

“Who brought this letter into my study?” I asked, tapping the envelope with my finger.

“Alpha,” he replied carefully, “it was handed to me last night by the guard on border duty. They found it near the outer gates. No one saw who left it. They only noticed it after the patrol passed.”

My jaw tightened.

“Call the guard who was on border duty that night,” I said coldly.

The guard bowed and hurried out. Minutes later, he returned with another guard trailing behind him. The second guard looked nervous, sweat already beading on his forehead.

I studied him silently for a moment before speaking.

“You were on border duty the night this letter appeared,” I said calmly.

“Yes, Alpha,” he replied, bowing quickly.

I leaned forward slightly. “Explain to me how a letter gets past my borders and into my study without you knowing who dropped it.”

The guard swallowed hard. “Alpha, I I didn’t see anyone. The patrol was clear. I swear.”

My eyes darkened.

“You were on duty,” I said slowly. “Your only job was to watch that border. And you’re telling me someone walked in, left a letter meant for me, and vanished without you noticing?”

“I’m sorry, Alpha,” he whispered.

“Sorry?” I echoed sharply. “Incompetence puts this entire pack at risk.”

The guard trembled.

I straightened and turned to the other guard. “Take him away. Make sure he’s punished according to protocol. Let this serve as a lesson.”

“Yes, Alpha,” the guard replied immediately, gripping the other man’s arm and dragging him out.

When the door closed, silence flooded the room.

I leaned forward and rested my head briefly against my hands, releasing a slow, controlled breath. My mind raced through enemies, old grudges, council members, traitors–anyone who might want to threaten my

peace.

None of it fit.

This wasn’t written like a warning from a stranger. It was personal. Mocking. As though the writer knew how happy I had been–and wanted to remind me that happiness was temporary.

With a frustrated sigh, I pulled another stack of files toward me. Work had always been my refuge. If I buried myself deeply enough in it, maybe the unease gnawing at me would loosen its grip.

“Raven,” I murmured.

She rested her chin on my shoulder and kissed my check softly. “You’ve been working nonstop,” she said gently. “It’s already past lunch.”

I glanced at the clock and frowned. “I didn’t even realize time flew by.”

She smiled and stepped around me, carefully nudging some files aside before sitting on the edge of “I asked a maid to bring you snacks. She should be here any moment.”

I reached for her hand and pressed a kiss to her fingers. “That’s thoughtful of you.”

She tilted her head, eyes bright. “Anything for my mate.”

A knock sounded at the door.

“Come in,” Raven said calmly.

“Eat,” she insisted softly.

As I did, my wolf stirred uneasily inside me, pacing, alert. Raven reached to move another file so the juice wouldn’t spill and froze.

Her fingers closed around the envelope.

“Reven,” I started, but it was too late.

She unfolded the letter and read.
