Reven’s POV

“Alpha, this is your lunch,” I said softly as I placed the tray of food on the wide wooden table in his study.
The smell of roasted meat and herbs filled the room, mixing with the faint scent of parchment and ink. I turned to leave immediately, as I always did. Being in the same room with him for too long was never safe emotionally or otherwise.
His hand shot out and caught my wrist.
I stiffened.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, forcing my voice to remain calm as my heart began to pound. I didn’t look at his face. I already knew the expression I would find there cold, sharp, and filled with resentment that had nothing to do with me and everything to do with his own demons.
He laughed, a bitter, humorless sound. “Are you really asking me that question?” he said. His grip tightened slightly. “You, of all people.”
I slowly turned to face him then. “I don’t understand what you mean.”
He rose from his chair abruptly, the wood scraping loudly against the floor. “You are the reason I am suspended from my Alpha role,” he snapped.
“And yet here you are, living your life, unbothered. Breathing. Walking freely. While my Beta rules in my place.”
The words hit me, but instead of fear, something else surged through me anger. Raw, burning anger that I had buried for far
too long.
I pulled my wrist from his grasp. “Should I cry?” I asked, my voice rising. “When you took me away from my family, were you crying? When you destroyed my life, were you bothered at all? No. You lived your life as if nothing happened. You slept peacefully while I suffered.”
He stared at me, stunned by my outburst.
“You should enjoy your time,” I continued, my words sharp as blades. “Let your Beta rule. You deserve it for the lives of the innocent wolves you wasted. For the blood on your hands.”
His eyes darkened. “How did you get those files?” he demanded. “I made sure they were hidden very well.”
I let out a cold laugh. “And that,” I said, stepping closer, “is exactly why you don’t play with an awakened wolf. When we decide to get back at you, it’s never gentle. It’s always painful.”
In the blink of an eye, he moved.
He stood up from his seat and slammed me against the wall, his forearm pressing against my chest. The impact knocked the air from my lungs.
“You think you’ve won?” he growled. “Just watch me present evidence to the council and reclaim my position.
Despite the fear clawing at my chest, I laughed. I actually laughed.
“A beast like you isn’t supposed to be an Alpha,” I said breathlessly.
That was when his hand closed around my throat.

He lifted me off the ground as if I weighed nothing. My feet dangled helplessly, my fingers clawing at his wrist as my vision began to blur.
“You call me a beast?” he roared. “Your mate is the reason I became someone I don’t recognize! Losing the people you love changes you. It breaks you. It twists you into something else entirely.”
Then, just as suddenly, he released me.
I collapsed to the floor, gasping for air, my throat burning.
I coughed violently, tears streaming down my face as my lungs struggled to work properly again.
He turned away from me.
I watched in stunned silence as he walked back to his seat and sank into it, his shoulders slumping. Then he began to sob.
An Alpha King crying.
It wasn’t something anyone saw every day.
“I know it’s not an excuse,” he said hoarsely, his face buried in his hands. “I know my cruelty can never be justified.
But since the death of my mate, I’ve become a monster. I took my frustration out on innocent wolves. And I hate myself for
it.”
I stood there, frozen.
I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know what to say.
Finally, I spoke, my voice quiet. “I know the pain of losing someone,” I said. “And I know it never truly goes away.
But you have to move forward. That’s where healing begins. Staying trapped in the past only destroys everyone around you.”
I didn’t wait for his response.
I walked out of the room.
Back in my room, I sank onto the edge of the bed, my body trembling as everything that had happened replayed in my mind. Now I understood his pain. I understood where his cruelty came from but understanding didn’t mean forgiveness.
Losing someone you love was not an excuse to destroy others.
I lay back on the bed and pulled the necklace from around my neck. My fingers trembled as I opened it. Inside was the picture of my children… and Alpha Ethan.
My chest tightened painfully.
“I can’t wait to see you,” I whispered. “I know you’re alive. And I will find a way to escape this place and come back to you.
Tears soaked the pillow as I sobbed myself to sleep.
A loud noise jolted me awake.
I sat up abruptly, my heart racing. Shouts echoed through the halls screams, cries, panic.

Chapter 368
What’s happening? I asked my wolf.
She was restless, uneasy. Danger.
I rushed to the door and opened it.
Chaos.

People were running everywhere warriors, women, children. Fear was etched onto every face I saw. I grabbed the arm of a passing woman.
“What’s happening?” I demanded.
“They’re attacking us!” she cried. “We’re under attack!”
Before I could respond, another woman dropped to her knees in front of me. “Please,” she begged, tears streaming down her face. “Take the children to safety.”
I stared at her.
She was one of them the same woman who, along with others and Sabrina, had beaten me in the past. Now she was begging me for help.
My gaze shifted to the children clinging to her dress. Innocent. Terrified.
Something inside me softened.
“Come,” I said quietly.
I gathered the children and led them and the women to a hidden safe area deep within the pack grounds. Once I was sure they were secure, I turned back toward the battlefield.
The sounds of clashing metal and snarling wolves filled the air.
The fight was brutal.
Everyone was fighting for their lives.
That was when I saw Edna.
She was surrounded, fighting hand–to–hand with several warriors.
Without thinking, I shifted into my wolf and leapt into the fray. I grabbed a fallen sword and joined the battle.
I didn’t know why I was fighting.
I just knew I had to.
In the chaos, I saw the Rough King fall.
He collapsed to the ground, blood pouring from his mouth. I rushed to him and dropped to my knees beside him.
“Wake up,” I pleaded. “Please, wake up.”
His eyes fluttered open briefly. “I’m sorry,” he whispered weakly. “For everything. Alpha Ethan… he’s with his sister. Please… take care of my sister. I place her in your hands.”

Tears streamed down my face. “Don’t talk like that,” I sobbed.
“I’m finally going to see my son and my wife,” he said softly.
“No!” I screamed as his body went still.
Even after everything he had done to me, I didn’t want him to die.
Rage consumed me.
I fought like a demon, forcing the remaining enemies to retreat.

Battle noise slowly faded around me as Edna and I dropped to the ground, our backs against a shattered tree trunk.
My chest rose and fell painfully as I struggled to catch my breath. My hands were shaking, slick with blood that wasn’t all mine. Smoke hung thick in the air, mixed with the scent of iron and death.
For a moment, I thought it was over.
I thought we had survived.
I turned my head toward Edna. She was bruised, dirt smeared across her face, her hair tangled and wild, but she was alive. Fighting. Breathing.
Relief washed over me so strongly my eyes
burned.
“You’re hurt,” she said, her voice strained as she looked me over.
“I’m fine,” I lied, forcing a weak smile. “You should see yourself.”
She huffed out a breathless laugh, then winced. “You’re impossible.”
I was about to respond when something sharp sliced through my wolf’s senses.
Danger.
“Edna-!” I shouted.
A loud gunshot ripped through the air.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t hesitate.
My body moved on its own.
I grabbed Edna and shoved her hard out of the way.
The bullet hit me before I even realized what I had done.
A blinding, tearing pain exploded through my head, white and merciless, as if the world had shattered inside my skull. The force sent me crashing to the ground. I barely heard myself scream.
Warmth poured down my face.
Blood.

My vision blurred instantly, the battlefield tilting and spinning as the sky above me darkened. I heard Edna’s scream–raw, broken, filled with terror.
“NO! REVEN!”
She scrambled back toward me as another gunshot rang out. I heard it distantly, like it came from underwater. Edna grabbed the fallen weapon beside me, turned with shaking hands, and fired back.
The rogue fell.
