Gillian dropped her voice to a teasing whisper. “Clara, does Hudson have a thing for you? Have you been playing with his feelings?”

Clara shook her head, voice ringing loud. “I’m not into immature males, so no, I’ve never toyed with him.”

Hudson’s face drained of color.

It clicked for Gillian. Clara had turned Hudson down, and he was still walking around acting like he owned the boyfriend title?

Clara turned toward Gillian, hardly believing her ears. Gillian actually thought she could pull off a seed?

“Gillian, you believe in me?”

“Of course. Clara, I believe in you. You’re going to make this happen.”

If she had pulled it off in her last life, there was no reason she couldn’t repeat the win in this one.

Gillian’s smile hit Clara like a shot of adrenaline and lit her heart right back up.

Patrol guards arrived quickly. They spotted the two Academy students sprawled on the floor, heard the shouting about saving them and grabbing the female who had attacked them, and immediately swung their gun barrels onto Gillian.

“On the ground. Hands behind your head. You’re coming with us.”

Gillian raised her hand and pulled up her wrist terminal, the screen flashing her credentials.

“I’m a seed specialist personally authorized by Black Rick. Every seed in this lab falls under my purview, no exceptions.”

The patrol guards moved in to verify her credentials, and Gillian cooperated without a second’s hesitation.

Once they confirmed the credentials were genuine and that she was also a cleric on the medical team, the dual rank prompted them to snap a salute.

“Captain Sterling, just say the word if you need anything.”

“Thanks.”

Gillian’s gaze slid down to Walter and Hudson on the floor. “These two get their kicks harassing females. If anything like this happens again, please cuff them on the spot.”

“Understood, Captain Sterling.”

Walter and Hudson couldn’t muster a single word. Neither of them had imagined that a female who looked younger than them carried this much authority.

“Bring your seeds over. Let me have a look.”

Gillian swept her gaze across the crowd, and not one rubbernecker escaped the scan.

“Today I want to see exactly what the Legion is getting. Black Rick has gone deep into debt to hand you the best equipment and the best seeds. What have you delivered in return?”

Everyone who had been so loud a minute ago lost their voices. None of them had figured they’d walked straight into the barrel of a gun.

“Move it. Or do I need to send you an invitation?”

Gillian’s voice carried a soft, sweet edge, but the authority threaded through it chilled the students to the bone, and they scrambled back to their own metal labs without another word.

Luckily, the labs sat close together, and Gillian worked her way through them one by one.

Clara stuck by her side through the inspection, walking her through the three phases of the work. Phase one used the taint to cultivate the seeds. Phase two pushed for sprouts that could survive the taint. Phase three planted them in actual farmland.

Most of them were stuck on phase two, and a handful of the unlucky ones hadn’t even cleared phase one.

Once Gillian finished her review, she pulled everyone together in one spot.

The smiles around the room faded fast when they read the look on Gillian’s face, and stomachs all over the hall started to knot.

“I just looked at a whole lot of seeds. Now tell me. Of the ones in your hands, which can survive even the first wave of taint exposure?”

“How could any of them? If we could pull that off, we’d be done already, wouldn’t we?”

Walter screwed up his mouth and muttered the words under his breath. As far as he was concerned, Gillian was just here to make their lives hard. Everyone in this lab was busting their tail. Everyone except Clara.

“Exactly. Captain Sterling, you have no idea how brutal it is to cultivate a single seed. We’ve poured our hearts into this.”

A handful of voices chimed in, though none of them carried much conviction.

Gillian flashed a brilliant smile.

“But Clara’s spore came through the first wave of taint just fine. You bunch of losers, what exactly are you bringing to compare with that?”

“Captain Sterling, accusations like that need hard proof. Don’t break everybody’s spirit over nothing.”

A flicker of contempt crossed Walter’s face.

Something about Walter struck Gillian as off. He had been dead certain Clara would fail from the very start, and that kind of certainty only came from having watched the outcome unfold with your own eyes.
