Chapter 177 Dean Holt Arrives

Gillian Sterling, dressed in white and standing dead center, had to be the boss’ wife.

She looked even more radiant in person than in her photos, and the boss had really lucked out, scoring a second-chance romance like this.

And wasn’t that Clara, the Parker family’s daughter, standing right next to Gillian? What was she doing here?

Wendell’s eyes went straight to Walter on the ground, and the moment he registered that his nephew hadn’t taken any serious damage, the knot of panic in his chest finally loosened.

“The dean’s here, everyone! Make way!”

A sharp-eyed student spotted Vance and Wendell and immediately started bellowing for the crowd to clear a path.

Wendell hovered a hand in the air with feigned humility and steered Vance directly over to his nephew, his entire posture practically dripping with false meekness.

“Dean, I do apologize for dragging you all the way out here today. My nephew Walter is a straight shooter by nature, which sometimes rubs the wrong sort of people the wrong way. I would ask you to handle the matter fairly. You have watched these young ones grow up yourself, so if Walter has stepped out of line in any way, you have my word that I will take him home and set him straight.”

Walter and every student standing nearby figured Clara was about to be hung out to dry.

Wendell had actually pulled the director himself into the mix.

Walter caught sight of his uncle and let out the breath he had been holding, his face plastered with a look that screamed thank god you finally showed up, any later and they would have beaten me to a pulp.

Hudson, on the other hand, did something that left the entire crowd staring. He pressed his lips together, stepped toward Clara, and tried to take her by the arm to lead her away.

A note of urgency cracked through his voice. “Clara, please, just hear me out.”

“If you have something to say, then say it. There’s no need to grab at me. Whatever it is, Dean Holt is right here, so spit it out in front of him.”

“Clara, how much longer are you going to drag this out? Enough already.”

Hudson looked at her with strained nerves. “Clara, this whole mess is on me. If you apologize to Walter right now, I can get him to drop the entire thing. Then I’ll help you pack up your things and we can leave here together, alright?”

This walnut-brained idiot wanted her to apologize now, of all moments, which would do nothing but cement the lie that she had been cheating.

“No deal. I haven’t done a thing wrong, so why on earth would I apologize to either of you?”

Clara couldn’t be bothered to waste another syllable on Hudson, so she turned on her heel and walked straight over to Vance, determined to put an end to this circus. She had reached her limit.

Hudson honestly couldn’t understand why Clara showed zero fear, since in her shoes he would have been begging for Vance’s mercy long ago.

He suddenly shouted at the top of his lungs, “Your seed is dead! At this point are you really still going to keep up this act? Are you going to drag your father’s name through the mud right alongside your own

Both fathers served as beastman officers in the Legion, although Hudson’s father held the rank of Major. one notch below Clara’s father.

Hudson wasn’t a bad-looking guy, and the bright, boyish energy in his voice tended to win people over easily. His current performance of a young man worried sick over the love of his life was the kind of act that, to any uninformed onlooker, would have earned him praise for sheer devotion.

But to Clara and Gillian, who actually knew the score, he came across as a self-absorbed clown drowning in his own delusions.

“If I had known you were the kind of guy who would sneak dirt into my petri dish behind my back, I wouldn’t have dared answer to my own name in your presence.”

By the time Clara reached Vance, her gaze had gone clear and steady, with not a trace of nervous bluffing left in it. A few of the sharper students began to wonder whether Clara had been telling the truth all along and actually had a live seed.

“Clara, you’ve got it all wrong. I was scared you’d burst into tears, so my brain blanked out and I dropped a fresh seed in for you. I never imagined you would turn around and treat it as the lifeline for your thesis.”

“But if I had handed in that seed report as my graduation thesis, do you have any idea what would have been waiting for me on the other side? Do you genuinely not understand?”

Hudson’s voice came out strained, as if every word had to be wrung from his throat. “I just wanted to make you happy.”

“Make me happy? Oh, I was thrilled, alright. You only dumped in one scoop of dirt.”

Her words sent a chill straight down more than a few spines in the crowd.

Anyone who put themselves in Clara’s shoes felt a wave of unease, picturing what it would be like if a so- called friend tampered with their experiments under the banner of having their best interests at heart.

Beyond the obvious problem of skewed results, that kind of meddling could very well torpedo someone’s entire career and reputation in a single stroke.

Who in their right mind would pull such a shameless stunt?

Clara couldn’t bring herself to spare Hudson another glance, since the guy clearly had a screw loose somewhere up top.

“Alright, everyone’s talking over each other and I’m starting to lose the thread. What actually happened
