“Lily, Dad had never met you before. He thought you were a bad guy. But now he knows you’re not. He came to say sorry.”
Gillian wasn’t trying to force Lily to accept Merrick right away. She just wanted to kill the hostility.
Lily hesitated. “Really?”
That was when Gillian noticed something. Lily’s white dress wasn’t a dress at all. It was her petals.
Gillian scrubbed them carefully, and Lily’s little face went pink from the steam.
Lily rested her cheek on the edge of the tub and let the water rock her, eyes drifting shut.
“Mom, this water feels so nice. The pool where I lived hurt so bad. Every day it hurt so much I wanted to destroy everything.”
Gillian’s chest ached. She rinsed the bubbles out of the tub. “You won’t ever have to go back there.”
“Really, Mom?”
“Really.”
Gillian scrubbed Lily from head to toe. By the time she was done, Lily was sound asleep.
Gillian wrapped her in a towel and lifted her out. She barely weighed anything. Gillian glanced down at her roots and froze. They had turned into tiny, delicate feet.
She shifted the towel and looked underneath. The petal dress was gone too. Just the body of a little girl.
She shifted. Did those two drops of concentrate push her over?
“White Griffin, open the bathroom door.”
The door slid open, and Merrick was standing right there. The tension in his face melted the second he saw she was unharmed.
His eyes dropped to the bundle in her arms. He reached out, and the little body under the towel went rigid.
Two bio-armor buttons landed softly on the towel. Merrick’s voice was flat and even. “I brought her a bio- armor suit. She has a name now. That means she acts like a person. No hurting anyone. If she does, I’ll deal

He watched Lily’s eyelids twitch. She was awake. Good. That meant she heard him.
Gillian smiled, “Lily’s not a bad kid. She’ll learn to live with us.”
Two tiny hands pressed against Gillian’s chest. Lily was scared of Merrick. She could feel it. He wasn’t hiding his killing intent at all, and she wasn’t strong enough to fight him. He’d already hacked off so many,

of her roots.
Noj like Mom. Mom is soft and warm.
So this is Dad. He is terrifying. I don’t want a dad. But the screen says babies have both a mom and a dad
Can I get a different one?
Gillian laid Lily on the bed and fastened the bio-armor buttons over her. A delicate little girl emerged.
But the outfit was standard-issue Legion black, way too severe for someone that small. Her looks carried it though. She came out sharp and striking.
“Mom.”
Lily felt Gillian starting to pull away. Her eyes flew open, and she grabbed at the edge of Gillian’s clothes.
Her big eyes blinked up at her, and she called out again in that soft little voice. “Mom.” The word was thick with need.
Gillian’s heart turned over. She patted Lily gently. “What’s wrong? You don’t like the clothes?”
Gillian pointed at her own chest, then at Merrick. “Look. Dad and Mom are both wearing the same Legion uniform. It matches Lily’s.”
