“Mrs. Cole, this taint core looks exactly like Lily’s,” Sylas said. “Nothing but thick black. Can’t see a thing”
He stood tall, holding a metal crate with a pink-white little fox curled inside.
Tristan’s eyes were squeezed shut, burning through beast crystals. His tail had split into five, all tucked behind him.
Hitting level 5 had started cracking the regression serum’s hold. If he clawed his way back to his original level, there was a real shot he’d shift back to six tails ahead of schedule.
His breathing steadied. He cracked an eye at the display, swallowed another beast crystal, coiled up, and kept pushing.
Sylas hadn’t caught anything off. Lily was sixty feet down now, and still nothing.
“Wait. Something down there already made her. It’s watching.”
Gillian’s psionic power picked up movement. Something gliding. The vibration ran straight up her spine.
She tightened her psionic power around Lily, signaling her something was close, and told the White Griffin to widen the feed.
The cryogold sphere in Lily’s hand and the white thread of psionic power wrapped around her waist gave off just enough glow to light her face. That was it.
The detection beams couldn’t cut through the taint hanging in the cave like fog. Seeing any farther was a joke.
But everywhere she walked, she left traces of the purge in the air. That scent would draw the thing out for
sure.
Lily figured she’d gone deep enough and stopped. Her small frame held still. She was watching something.
Everyone staring at the display held their breath.
Then a flash of vivid red shot out from behind her.
Just a glimpse, but it was enough. A wild mane of red hair and scarlet petals, slick and strange. She was a red spider lily.
She went at Lily the second she registered her, no warning, full hostility. A mass of pale roots slammed into Lily and flipped her. The cave was already tight, and now dust choked the whole cave.
Lily dodged fast, the glow from the cryogold sphere flickering so the team topside could still track her in
the dark.
The spider lily wasn’t letting up. Her roots came down like a storm, full kill-shot intensity.
Lily didn’t flinch. She slipped left, ducked right, jumped, dropped, reading every strike. She dodged the

“Lily’s smart,” Merrick said. “They’re about even in strength, but she’s been holding back. She’s letting the other one burn herself out.”
Rare praise from him. Lily was sharp as hell.
The fight tipped. Lily, rested and running on a full tank, started owning the ground.
She found her window and slipped right into the spider lily’s face. She cracked open the cryogold sphere, and the smell that hit the air made the purge from earlier smell like nothing.
The spider lily froze. She hesitated, weighing her options, trying to figure out how to handle Lily.
Lily didn’t give her the chance. She licked a drop of the concentrate and yelled, “Mom gave me this. You want some, you come with me to Mom.”
Then she turned and bolted for the surface.
At the word “Mom,” the red-haired girl swallowed. Her pale roots surged, and she tore after Lily.
The display showed both of them closing in on the surface. Merrick ordered everyone back. Only he and Gillian stayed.
Lily hit the surface but didn’t run to Gillian. She stopped right at the mouth of the hole, butt in the air, waiting.
