Chapter 244 This Mom Feels Wrong

Chapter 244 This Mom Feels Wrong

Adrian caught the edge in Merrick’s voice and read it instantly.

Something’s off. If Commander actually had the time to chew us out, he’d have already kicked our heads in.

This whole performance was for someone else’s benefit. He didn’t know who was watching, but he was smart enough to drop to one knee and play his part.

“Sir, it’s on us,” he said. “We’ll haul these corpses off and dispose of them now.”

“Then what the hell are you waiting for?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Lily, Gillian’s injuries are still unknown,” Merrick said. “Keep holding her. We’re heading back.”

He turned to leave without another word, and Lily didn’t get it. Normally, if Gillian so much as whimpered, Merrick would hover over her hand for an hour. Why wouldn’t he even look at her now?

“Gillian, wake up.”

Freya tried to step forward and check on her, but her legs gave out before she’d moved two steps, and she crumpled.

Elara caught her and checked her over fast, then let out a breath. “She’s just drained. Gillian’s been found. Let’s head back first.”

Lily saw Freya collapse and couldn’t think straight about anything else. She scooped Gillian up and followed Merrick.

Ruby didn’t move. She was still burning over that black hole hurting Gillian, and she was going to tear this whole place apart.

“Sir, go on ahead,” Adrian called out. “We’ll wipe out the rest of these parasites so they don’t foul the area.”

His voice had barely faded when the Gillian in Lily’s arms stirred and slowly blinked her eyes open. She looked terrified for a second, then spotted Merrick and the others, and her face shifted into something stubborn and relieved.

“Mom, you’re awake!” Lily’s voice lit up.

Gillian let out a soft sound and reached up to stroke Lily’s face, her touch gentle in a way that didn’t match the flash of hunger in her eyes.

Such a sweet flower pup. Level 8 already. She’d taste incredible raw.

“Mom, the way you’re looking at me is scaring me,” Lily said.

Her hands jerked back, and Gillian hit the ground. That look-Lily could’ve sworn she’d just seen something that wanted to eat her alive.

“Lily, that really hurt.” Gillian on the ground pulled a pained expression. Her face was already smoothing back into something soft and innocent.

Lily rubbed her eyes.

Did I imagine it?

She opened her mouth to apologize, and a large hand pressed her back and shoved her aside.

“You can’t handle one simple thing without hurting your mother,” Merrick said, his voice pure ice. “You’re done here. Go clean up the battlefield with Ruby.”

The words stung as he pushed her toward Ruby, who wrapped her arms around Lily and held tight.

“Yes, Dad Merrick,” Lily said.

I didn’t mean to drop her. But this mom feels wrong.

She bit down on her lip and stayed quiet.

“Merrick, don’t be angry.” Gillian’s voice came out shy and trembling, like she was barely holding back tears. “I probably just zoned out and scared her. It wasn’t Lily’s fault.”

She trailed off halfway through, like the words hurt too much to finish, and the whole act played like Lily had genuinely wounded her.

Lily’s chest went tight. She had dropped her-that part was real. She lowered her head. “Mom, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“Enough,” Merrick cut in. “A mistake is a mistake. Think about it and do better.”

Lily tried to speak again, but Ruby tugged her back and shook her head. Lily’s eyes went red, and she didn’t say another word.

Merrick turned to Gillian. “Of course she’s getting punished for dropping you. When you’re feeling better, you can punish her however you want. One worthless flower doesn’t add up to a single finger on your hand.”

The fake Gillian nearly laughed out loud. She hadn’t known this identity would work this well.
