Chapter 28 The Bond’s Pull

Chapter 28 The Bond’s Pull

She pulled back the robe. Golden light-the power to purge taint-shifted to white.

Inch by inch, it knit his necrotic flesh back together.

“If I weren’t here, ten clerics couldn’t have saved you.”

By the time she’d finished treating Merrick’s injuries, it was one-thirty in the afternoon.

She stood over the bed, watching him sleep peacefully.

Why do I want to pounce on him? God, since when have I been this desperate?

It had to be the bond. The core bond made her heart race and her cheeks flush. That was all. If she kept her distance, it would stop.

Yes. Definitely.

She left him in bed and hurried toward the medical hall.

Halfway there, she spotted a patrol and stopped.

“Captain Sterling? Something wrong?”

“Fifty minutes ago, one of you responded to my message. Went to check on the cleric housing. Who was it?”

The one who’d been dismissed with a few words.

The patrol leader shook his head. “We just rotated in, Captain Sterling. If you need to identify the soldier, check the logs.”

Gillian thought it was just too convenient.

/ “Thanks.”

She’d wanted to ask about the beastmen who’d brought Merrick in, too. But his information was sealed on the StarNet. And that bio-armor button cost a million coins-no ordinary soldier could afford that.

Merrick’s rank in the 9th Legion had to be significant.

She turned and kept walking toward the treatment hall.

Her wrist terminal flickered as she moved. Names appeared.

Merrick’s identity was encrypted. He was probably a colonel or above.

She didn’t have the clearance to look into Tristan’s identity. Being a major put him/just one rank above her.

But Sylas? She found something.

A serpent beastman recruited from Waterveil City. Genetic defect. Severe injury in a taint outbreak three years ago.

Then he left Merrick’s personal guard. He ended up in the medical corps.

It took him three years to become deputy chief. When Elara left, he took over as chief.

She’d walked in and taken his position the moment she arrived. No wonder he hated her.

But so what? If he had a problem, he could try to take her out. If he couldn’t-he could suffer in silence.

Gillian had a good memory. She didn’t need an escort this time.

She walked into the medical hall and immediately spotted someone she’d rather not see.

“Captain Sterling. Late to your own shift. Not even in uniform. Is the 9th Legion your personal playground now?”

He’d been waiting an hour and a half.

Tristan’s eyes narrowed, assessing.

She wasn’t just late. Her clothes were rumpled, the hem wrinkled and stained with something dark. Her eyes were bright and watery. The flush hadn’t faded from her cheeks.

She looked like she’d been rolling in the mud with some male.

Having an affair inside the legion? Did she think the 9th Legion was a brothel?

Gillian pressed her lips together. A flicker of disappointment crossed her eyes. He was still alive, then. That medicinal metal she’d given him was only… eight or nine hours old.

Hands in pockets, she slid her professional smile back on.

“None of your concern, Major Lawson. As for where I’ve been the past half hour? Cleared it

with Lt. Col. Parker. Anything else?”

Tristan’s jaw tightened. She has no shame.

Her utter lack of guilt made his expression darken further.
