Merrick stepped forward and looked down at Gillian, the corner of his mouth lifting as he murmured, “Gillian, you actually want me to carry you into the car, don’t you?”

Gillian was momentarily speechless.

His injury that afternoon must have hit his head, not his chest.

Gillian pressed her lips together and gave him a sweet smile. “Nope. I already made plans with Freya. She’s waiting for me at the base gate. If I bail on her now, what’s she supposed to do?”

“Freya Reed?”

Merrick shot a startled glance at the driver’s seat.

Lucian froze too. They had just gotten back from a mission and had no idea Gillian and Freya were that close.

Lucian fired off a message to Freya without hesitation.

“Yeah, Captain Reed. I’m heading out.”

Gillian started to turn away, but a pair of arms hooked around her waist and bundled her straight into the car.

“What the hell, Merrick?”

Gillian realized the cabin had gotten cramped fast, because Merrick had climbed in and settled right next to her.

“Are you some kind of creep? I told you Freya’s expecting me. Let me out.”

Freya had been waiting on her for hours, and bailing on her now would be a terrible look.

Gillian’s words barely left her mouth before the grip-buggy shot off like a missile.

The back of her head almost slammed against the seat.

“Who taught you to drive?”

Merrick’s voice held an edge of displeasure, but before Gillian could orient herself, he had already pulled her into his arms. A faint scent of sandalwood and pine wrapped around her.

By now the buggy had cleared Section F, and Gillian cracked the window for a careful look outside. Freya’s red buggy was nowhere in sight.

Gillian turned back inside, a touch of irritation in her voice. “Merrick, did you text Freya and tell her to leave?”

“Gillian, that wasn’t me. I never message another feinäle first, ever!”

Merrick rushed to defend himself, and his gaze slid pointedly toward the driver.

Gillian followed his line of sight. So he was saying the driver had sent the message?

The cabin was dim, though, and she couldn’t make out who was up there.

“Who is he?”

“His call sign in the Sovereign Guard is Number One. His real name is Lucian Lawson, and he leads the unit.”

When it came to Gillian, Merrick was planning to walk her through every person and every detail in his world, one piece at a time.

“Lucian? So what’s his connection to Tristan?”

Before Merrick could answer, a low voice came from the driver’s seat.

Lucian spoke up. “Ma’am, Tristan is my younger brother.”

Gillian’s expression darkened. So this was why Lucian had hauled Tristan off. He was pulling rank to save that pathetic little fox.

Lucian’s bluntness from the front seat lodged something tight in Gillian’s chest.

So what was Merrick’s angle here? Stuffing her into this guy’s car, was he trying to disgust her, or was this some kind of setup?

“Gillian, are you mad?”

Merrick watched Gillian’s face go blank as she turned and fixed her stare out the window, and he knew right then he was in trouble.

“I’m not mad. Just keep driving.”

“I can explain.”
