It wasn’t like she’d come out worse in that exchange.

Gillian turned her head aside and kept both hands braced against Merrick’s shoulders, doing her best not to sit fully in his lap.
Her cheeks were on fire. “They’re all waiting on us. Pull yourself together.”
A part of her seriously wanted to bite Merrick to death right where he sat.
But the second the thought of actually killing him crossed her mind, the primal core in her chest refused to give her a single drop of psionic power.
She couldn’t kill him, couldn’t fight him off. What was she supposed to do?
“Scared now? Where’d all that nerve from biting me go?”
His rough thumb was already brushing along her neck, easing a stray lock of hair out from under her collar with surprising care.
A note of hope crept into Merrick’s voice. “Your arms have to be tired holding yourself up like that.”
“Merrick! Get off…”
Pushing her this far had her cursing at him, and Merrick was tempted to throw caution out the window. But doing it here would be a sloppy move that shortchanged his Gillian.
Merrick worked to reel himself back in, and his voice slowly leveled out.
“Gillian, this dress suits you. I knew it’d look beautiful on you.”
The look in his eyes alone told her how striking she actually looked in it.
The black-and-gold dress she was wearing was a piece of bio-armor that cost a small fortune.
It had a high collar that fell open along the shoulders, paper-thin black gauze covering everything above the chest, with sheer sleeves running from bare shoulders all the way down to her wrists.
The fabric of the skirt was light and breathable, and along the sides of her abdomen, the cutouts formed the spread wings of a golden griffin.

The cinched waist put every inch of her figure on display.
He did finally release her in the end, giving her a small breath of space.
“Gillian, next time, don’t tell me no. Please. I really can’t keep myself in check.”

Gillian had genuinely had it, and gold light was already gathering in her palm to teach this lecher a lesson, but Merrick pulled the door open and helped her step out before she could
“Gillian, your grandma’s coming.”
Gillian looked up, and sure enough, her grandmother was making her way toward the buggy. Mabel had clearly gotten tired of waiting and had come out looking for them.
Number Two was walking beside her, slim-built and easy on the eyes, with a tongue so sweet he had Mabel smiling from the first word.
“Grandma, Black Rick is helping his wife change. They’ll be over in a minute. No need to worry.”
“I was just getting a little restless. Don’t trouble yourself over me, dear.”
A genuine smile spread across Number Two’s face. “No way, ma’am. The second I saw you, I felt like family. Your smile reminds me of my own grandma’s. I haven’t been home in years, so let me keep you company.”
Mabel sighed and stopped protesting. “Good boy. Thank you for sitting with this old lady.”
From their angle behind the buggy, Mabel still couldn’t see Gillian.
“Are you ever going to let go?”
Gillian pushed Merrick’s hands away and pressed a small metal button at her waist.
A faint dark ripple of light traveled down the dress, and every wrinkle smoothed itself out.
She left Merrick where he stood and hurried over to her grandmother, “Grandma, why’d you come out? I’m home.”
“Honey, as long as you’re back. That’s all that matters.”
Mabel held onto Gillian’s hands, but her eyes were already searching past her granddaughter’s shoulder.

Gillian’s smile froze on her face. “Grandma, you two are on a first-name basis already?”
“Gillian. Grandma.”
Merrick came up from behind with a metal case in hand, handed it off smoothly to Number Two, then took a place at Gillian’s side and gently looped his arm under Mabel’s/elbow.
“Grandma, I had to grab something. Sorry I’m late.”
“Not late at all, Merrick. We’re family. We don’t stand on ceremony at dinner. Come on inside.”
Merrick? It looked like he’d really won her grandmother over fast. They were already past the formality stage.
Gillian watched Merrick walk in with Mabel and slowly put two and two together. He must have already come by this afternoon.
“Number Two, did Merrick swing by my place this afternoon?
Number Two kept the smile on his face. “Yes, ma’am. Black Rick came over earlier. He sat with Mabel for a while and even helped cook a few dishes.”
Merrick could cook?
That genuinely surprised her.
