“Yep, Gillian, your nose is as sharp as your name. Not a day off, not a day on. This is exactly a ten-year vintage.”
George lit up like he’d found a long-lost drinking buddy.
“George, this is the real deal.”
Her primal core had been shattered in her last life. Her face had been scarred, the taint had carved chronic pain into her body, and on rainy days the pain used to make her cry.
Back then Wasteland City was already in ruins, and you couldn’t find anesthetic, or painkillers anywhere
Vivienne had managed to dig up bottles of liquor from somewhere.
Only the blackpine wine, brewed from a fruit that grew wild all over the region, took the edge off her pain
So this was all George’s private stash.
Gillian could normally hold her liquor just fine, but she was carrying twins now and couldn’t touch a drop.
She shot Freya a pleading look.
Freya started to rise, but the hand beside her clamped down and pulled her back into her seat.
Lucian’s grip held firm. The commander would cover Gillian’s share. He just needed Freya to stay put, stay close, not jump into the middle of it.
When Lucian just stared at her without saying anything, a flush crept across Freya’s face, and she slipped her hand out of his.
“What are you grabbing me for?”
Lucian opened his mouth to answer, but Freya was already on her feet, and in the end he said nothing.
Gillian had not seen this coming. Freya and Lucian were a thing?
She made a teasing finger heart, both hands lifted, eyes wide,
“Freya, are you two, you know, a thing?”
“Gillian, oh god, stop, no, we’re not like that.”
Freya’s cheeks burned. She slapped her hands down over Gillian’s. Where had this girl picked up the nerve to tease people like that?
Gillian let out a slow oh. If they weren’t together, why were they sitting hip to hip?
Her gaze swept Freya’s face like a little radar.

Freya pinched Gillian’s cheek and shot her a glare that practically shouted, knock it off, you brat.

She cleared her throat. “Gillian, this is Lucian Lawson, captain of the Sovereign Guard. Anything you can’t handle, go to him. Lucian, this is Gillian, the medical team’s new chief medical officer.”
“Frey, we already know each other.”
Lucian rose before Gillian could even respond, shedding his earlier silence.
“Ma’am, thank you for your help today.”
Freya’s eyes flicked between them. They already knew each other? How?
Vivienne and Clara were wondering the same thing.
George wasn’t surprised at all. He patted Vivienne’s hand and leaned in to murmur an explanation.
“Gillian’s mate is on the Sovereign Guard. Of course he knows Lucian. Look around, Sylas is here, Number Two, Number Three, the whole crew. Question is, which number is Gillian’s husband?”
Vivienne sighed. You could call Gillian lucky, sure, she’d landed a Sovereign Guard. You could also call her cursed for the exact same reason.
Sovereign Guard meant high rank and high pay, yes, but it also meant the most dangerous post in the legion. Anyone in that unit hit the front lines right alongside Merrick.
Blasphemous as it sounded, that exact possibility was every military spouse’s worst nightmare.
Not a single Sovereign Guard had earned that rank without wading through rivers of blood. The honor, the tears, the hardship buried in it were never something outsiders could understand.
Sylas’ eyes flickered at George’s words.
George had no idea Gillian’s mate was actually Merrick?
Which meant George valued Gillian for who she was, not for who she was attached to.
“Colonel Lawson, no need to thank me. You already paid me for it.”
Lucian had wired the payment fast, she had to give him that.
Gillian nodded knowingly. “Honestly though, I had no idea you were Freya’s boyfriend.”
“He’s not, Gillian, I told you, stop making things up.”
Before Lucian could get a word in, Freya’s cheeks had already flushed deep red. She coughed once to cover the embarrassment.
He hadn’t even confessed to her yet. It didn’t count.
Oh. So Lucian was simping for Freya but hadn’t sealed the deal yet?
