That witch had opened her mouth and demanded a billion coins. The audacity was unreal.

If he got hauled back home and married off to a stranger, he’d rather die.

Tristan racked his brain and still couldn’t figure it out.

How could Merrick have fallen for a two-faced female like her?

Merrick wasn’t just the most powerful man in Wasteland City.

And yet he’d bonded with someone like Gillian?

Whoever Merrick chose to bond with should be at least Elara’s level, shouldn’t she?

Remembering everything Gillian had pulled, Tristan figured staying here would get him tortured beyond recognition.

He wanted to climb out of the metal box right then. He had to run.

Yes. He’d find a way. He’d smuggle himself off to the Capital Planet.

He’d find Elara and convince her to win Merrick back.

Tristan had just lifted his head when he realized the door wasn’t fully shut. A thin slice of light from the living room spilled in through the gap and landed on the side of the metal box.

The reflection on the metal wall finally gave Tristan a clear look at what he’d become.

Where had his fur gone?

Where was his soft, fluffy, snow-white coat?

Tristan blinked and waved a stubby paw. The ugly thing in the metal wall blinked and waved one right back.

His vision went black, and he collapsed at the bottom of the box with a soft thump.

With no fur, he might as well have been stripped naked.

It had to be Gillian. This was all her doing.

The wicked Gillian had seen him bare. She was Merrick’s own wife, and yet she was lusting after his body!

The door creaked open all the way.

Tristan raised his head with murder in his eyes, only to see Mabel walking in with water and a plate of chicken cakes.

A low growl rolled out of his throat in warning. Stay away from me.

“Merrick and Gillian are heading upstairs to bed. So tell me, can you bite me faster than he can come back down and beat the daylights out of you?”

Mabel didn’t look the least bit worried.

Merrick and Gillian were going upstairs to bed?

He could understand every word on its own. So why couldn’t his brain put them together?

How could those two share a bed?

Wasn’t Merrick supposed to be keeping himself for Elara?

How could Merrick possibly sleep with that wicked Gillian?

Tristan stared in disbelief.

No, this didn’t make sense. Merrick had to have been seduced. Tristan remembered exactly how Gillian had come on to him.

Fury and heartache twisted in Tristan’s chest at the same time.

How was his brother running the Sovereign Guard?

How had he let a vicious female like Gillian get anywhere near Merrick?

Mabel watched Tristan flop belly-up and fall silent, and her smile widened.

“Hungry?”

Tristan now had every reason to suspect Mabel was Gillian’s foot soldier, sent in here to gloat.

He didn’t want to engage. His upbringing wouldn’t let him sink his teeth into someone Mabel’s age.

But the aroma drifting through the air kept pulling at his heart.

“Lucian is a good kid. I’m letting you stay here for three months because of him. But you have to promise me one thing. Whatever grudge you’ve got against Gillian ends today. You don’t get to hurt her again.”

Tristan was ready to scoff, but his stomach growled loudly enough to betray him.

His brother, honestly, had walked out without even feeding him.

“No answer means yes in my book. A real man stands by his word. Once you’ve agreed, you stick to it.”

Mabel set the food down inside the metal box and turned to leave.

He hadn’t agreed to anything. What was he supposed to stand by?

Once he was back to normal, he was going to expose Gillian for who she really was. Wait, sniff sniff. Why did the cake in front of him smell so good?

Chapter 58 Bare and Bound

After Mabel left, the room dropped back into silence.

Only then did Tristan open his eyes.

A full plate of meat cakes sent up that hypnotic smell, and his head went empty.

His narrow fox eyes locked on the meat for a long minute.

Could the meat be poisoned, sent by Mabel to finish him off?

Tristan, summoning every shred of pride, refused to eat. He went back to clawing his way up the side of the box.

With a soft thud, his weak legs gave out and he tumbled back to the bottom of the box. Stars burst behind his eyes, and only then did he stop fighting.

He didn’t want to be married off, and he didn’t want to starve to death in this beat-up metal box either. Once he caught his breath, Tristan turned his head and finished off the entire plate of chicken cakes.

The second the meat hit his tongue, his sulky little eyes lit up.
