Chapter 62 The Hungry Beast
Chapter 62 The Hungry Beast
Merrick followed Gillian up to the second floor. For a split second his eyes sharpened, then slipped right back into that goofy daze.
Seeing him with his head bowed like that, Gillian assumed he wasn’t feeling well.
Worried he might wander off, she locked the bedroom door from the inside.
“Wait here. I’m gonna take a shower.”
“Shower? I want one too.”
“Not now. You can shower later. Stay here and wait.”
By her math, he would be sober soon enough and could wash up on his own.
Gillian stepped into the bathroom, rinsed off quickly, wrapped herself in a towel, and came back out.
When she opened the door, Merrick was leaning lightly against the doorframe, waiting for her.
Steam billowed out of the bathroom, and her skin glowed dewy and soft from the warm air.
The moment her eyes met those flat, emotionless black ones, Gillian instinctively took a step back.
Had he sobered up already?
“Gillian, shower.”
That familiar dopey tone meant he still hadn’t snapped out of it.
Gillian let out a small breath. “Merrick, come with me.”
She hadn’t planned on dealing with him, but a single glance showed his pant legs were caked with dirt.
Considering how good he had looked swinging that shovel earlier, she could grudgingly run a bath for him.
“Mhm.”
A big, dopey Merrick sat obediently on the rim of the tub.
He watched Gillian fill the tub with a clear, innocent gaze.
Gillian had her side to him and missed it. In one instant, the heavy clarity drained from his deep eyes, and dark clouds gathered inside them.
Merrick blinked, startled to find himself in the bathroom.
After processing the two hours he had just lost his head over, Merrick let out an inward sigh. His Gillian actually preferred the goofy version of him more.

Chapter 62 The Hungry Beast
Gillian had no idea a starving wolf had just woken up inside him.
“Test it. See if the water’s too hot. If it’s fine, you can hop in.”
Gillian took Merrick’s hand and lowered it into the water, but he didn’t say a word.
Puzzled, she turned to look at him.
A pair of puppy-dog eyes, all innocence and clarity, met hers.

Merrick’s fingers laced suddenly through hers, and with that grip he yanked her flush against his chest.
“Merrick, what the hell?”
Gillian’s legs splashed into the tub, soaking her robe halfway up.
“Gillian, when you begged me to save you back then, do you remember what you promised me in return”
The cool voice in her ear sent a jolt of panic through Gillian. Had the real Merrick surfaced?
“Merrick, let me up first.”
Gillian’s grip on his hand tightened with surprising force as she tried to break out of his hold.
“Gillian, where are you running off to? Answer me. Or did you only say that to trick me into bed?”
“Merrick, the idea that a core bond gives you new abilities is just a legend. Besides…”
Merrick looked like he was listening, but his hot gaze had locked onto her throat like a predator on prey, waiting for the strike that would land clean.
“Besides what?”
Afraid of scaring Gillian, he reined the surging want back a notch, and his voice dropped low and rough.
“Aren’t you supposed to be saving yourself for Elara?”
Gillian felt Merrick shift behind her and sucked in a sharp breath, hoping that name might still pull him back from the edge.
“Gillian, what Tris said earlier, you were jealous, weren’t you?”
Merrick smiled. Inside, he was thrilled. So Gillian did care about him.
A tender hand pressed lightly over her heart.
The moment Merrick made contact, Gillian could clearly feel the dark beast-shadow sleeping inside her primal core stir awake.
It roared and surged through her body, hungry to ignite a fire that would burn her to ash along with it.

Chapter 62 The Hungry Beast
The pink bond-force flushed Gillian’s skin rosy all over in an instant.
Her clear eyes blurred over with a film of moisture.
“Merrick, let go of me. I don’t want a man whose heart belongs to someone else.”

Merrick’s strong arms pinned Gillian against the side of the tub as he slid into the water with her. The waist-deep tub held them both, but plenty of water sloshed over the edge.
Their two shadows tangled together beneath the water, looking for all the world like a pair of devoted lovers.
“Gillian, I’m clean. Don’t turn me away.”
Merrick pressed a gentle kiss to the corner of her mouth.
The beast-shadow and the gold flame inside their primal cores fused greedily into one, no longer hers or
his.
What came next was inevitable.
The next stretch of time blurred into heat and breath and tangled limbs.
“Gillian, love me, won’t you?”
