Chapter 69 The Cleric’s Reach

Chapter 69 The Cleric’s Reach

“That long?”

“You probably already know this, ma’am. The 9th Legion has over a hundred thousand soldiers, but our medical staff is only in the low hundreds.

“Most of them just rely on the scanners over in Section F, pull their own report, and read through it on their own.

“If nothing’s seriously wrong, most don’t bother coming in. Only the ones who can’t take it anymore actually show up at the medical bay.”

“Is that so?”

Gillian tapped at her wrist terminal in an idle rhythm. “Commander Cole doesn’t cover your medical care?”

Hearing Merrick’s name made Sylas’ expression shift to one of careful respect.

“If it’s a taint injury from a mission, the legion covers the treatment for free. The commander doesn’t have the money either. He’s in a tough spot.”

“Merrick has it tough? He’s got nine guys in the Sovereign Guard alone, How is that tough?”

Sylas’ voice turned serious.

“I came to Wasteland six years ago. The leader of the 8th Legion had just been killed, and the city was sliding into chaos. That’s when the commander showed up. He built Wasteland back from nothing with his bare hands.”

An image from the cleric quarters yesterday flashed through Gillian’s mind.

Merrick’s wounds back then had been close to fatal.

If she hadn’t been there in that moment, he would have applied the healing alloy straight to his skin, and the taint would have spread through him from the inside.

That was most likely the root of the 9th Legion’s swift collapse in her last life.

Merrick wasn’t quite as polished as he looked on the surface.

“So how exactly did he build it back from nothing?”

“He marched straight into the Elemental Cities and shook them down. Went house by house demanding money and manpower.”

Sylas smiled. That sort of stunt was exactly something the commander would pull.

Was Merrick really that brazen? Kicking down doors to demand soldiers?

Chapter 69 The Cleric’s Reach

Gillian stared at the back of Sylas’ head and couldn’t help but laugh.

“Don’t tell me you’re one of the guys he strong-armed in?”

The moment the conversation turned to himself, Sylas went quiet. He only spoke again after a long pause

You could say that.”

Either you were or you weren’t. What did ‘could say’ even mean?

The mood in the van turned suddenly still.

“When Elara was still around, did the medical team have an easier time treating patients?”

Gillian thought back to the photo in the medical wing, the one whose colors still hadn’t faded.

Without Elara, Merrick must have had it rough.

“Yeah. With her around, we all rested a lot easier.”

On the medical bed, Tristan’s eyelid gave a faint twitch at the mention of Elara.

“What about these last three years? Has Elara been healing the entire 9th Legion all on her own? Last I heard, she’s only listed as a level-three cleric publicly.”

How could one level-three cleric possibly treat an entire legion?

A hundred thousand beastman soldiers were stationed here.

“You probably already know about the accident three years ago. Every cleric in the squad died that day.

“All five of the Elemental Cities tore into the commander for failing to protect them. You have to understand, three hundred clerics were nearly six years’ worth of graduates from the entire Elemental City system.

“The 9th Legion was on the brink back then. Elara was the one who pulled us out single-handedly”

When the topic turned to Elara, Gillian noticed Sylas’ tone soften a few degrees.

Sylas hadn’t planned on saying much more about Elara, but then he remembered the commander’s instructions from that morning.

The commander had told him that if Gillian asked, Sylas was to give her every detail in full. While he was away, if she ran into any kind of danger, he had authorized Sylas to go feral and kill without restraint.

The commander really had fallen hard for Gillian.

“The truth is, Elara isn’t actually a level three like she’s listed. She’s level four. But these last three years haven’t been easy on her either. At her lowest point, she borrowed ten level-three clerics from Capital Planet.”

Level four, really? Elara was a remarkable woman. No wonder she had been Gillian’s idol all this time.
