Chapter 101

Aurora found herself isolated in a corner, her eyes following Sophia as she tenderly used a napkin to wipe away the drink that had ruined Ethan’s shirt and hairstyle. The unfortunate spill had forced them to make an early exit from the party. Aurora was drowning her sorrows, glass after glass of champagne. Had her grandfather not insisted she attend the event, citing her recent melancholy, she wouldn’t have had to deal with this absurd social circus.
“Little future Ms. Fairbank, you’re quite the audacious one, aren’t you?” came a voice from behind her. Turning, she found Alaric Strider, impeccably dressed in a white suit, taking a seat beside her.
“Always have been,” Aurora replied, her lips curling into a half–smile, half–smirk that betrayed a mix of amusement and disdain.
Alaric pointed subtly towards Silas, who had been casting glances in their direction all evening. “That young man from the Song family seems to have taken quite an interest in you, hasn’t he?”
Aurora took another sip of her champagne, her eyes narrowing slightly. “So what’s the plan? Should we break his legs to ensure he keeps
his distance?”
Alaric chuckled, “Well, you can’t just go around breaking the legs of heirs to prominent families like the Songs.”
Aurora leaned back into the plush sofa, her eyes narrowing even further, almost challenging. “I thought you guys were all about bravado. So you’re saying you wouldn’t dare?”
Alaric noticed her flushed cheeks and wondered just how much she had imbibed before his arrival. “Who’s ‘you guys“?” he asked, feigning ignorance.
“Heath Fairbank,” she replied. “He’s pretty audacious, intimidating even.”
“Is that so? You never seemed to be intimidated by him,” Alaric observed, his eyes narrowing as he tried to read her.
Aurora’s eyes were now almost closed, her thoughts becoming increasingly foggy. She’d been emotionally drained lately, and the confrontations with Evelyn and Sophia earlier had led her to drink more than she usually would. “I’m afraid of him,” she mumbled, almost
to herself.
She was afraid of the emotional walls she had built being torn down by this aloof man. Afraid that once he saw her true self, he would leave her. Afraid that the web of lies and manipulations would one day unravel, leaving her to face the consequences alone.
‘Little future Ms. Fairbank?” Alaric called out softly, but Aurora, now leaning heavily against the sofa, gave no response.
Feeling a bit helpless and not knowing what else to do, Alaric was about to leave when Maxwell, Aurora’s older brother, approached. “I’ll take care of her,” he said, his voice tinged with a mix of concern and authority.
“You’re the eldest son of the Pendleton family?” Alaric asked, a note of surprise in his voice,
Maxwell simply nodded. “Yes, I’ll look after Aurora. You’ve done enough, thank you.”
Alaric felt a pang of internal conflict. This was a golden opportunity to help Heath. He stepped aside and quickly dialed Heath’s number. When Heath answered, his voice was as icy as ever. “Speak.”
“Do you know Evelyn Pendleton is hosting a party tonight?” Alaric began, but before he could finish, Heath cut him off.

“No, and I don’t care,” he replied, clearly uninterested.
“Your girl is here, Alaric quickly added, sensing Heath’s impending disengagement.
There was a pause on the other end of the line. “And?”
“She seems to be in a bad mood and has had quite
bit to drink. If you don’t make an appearance, there will be no shortage of volunteers willing to escort her home,” Alaric said, barely able to contain his glee.
Heath’s voice turned even colder, if that was possible. “What are you implying?”
Alaric spilled the beans about Maxwell’s apparent concern for Aurora and how Silas had been eyeing her like a hawk all evening. “If you don’t come, I won’t be responsible for keeping an eye on her. Maxwell is already taking care of her,” he said, relishing the drama he was stirring.
Heath’s car engine roared to life on the other end of the line. “What do you want in return?”
“Let me drive that new race car you got last month,” Alaric said, seizing the opportunity.
“Pick up the keys yourself,” Heath replied, flooring the accelerator as he sped out of his garage.
Alaric returned to find Aurora asleep on the sofa, her face contorted in discomfort. Maxwell had fetched some warm water, but she couldn’t drink any more. He was about to carry her home when Alaric walked in.
“Leaving so soon?” Alaric asked, trying to stall for time.
Maxwell nodded. “Aurora’s drunk. I’m taking her home.”
Alaric tried to engage him in business talk about a new project by the Fairbank family, but Maxwell cut him short. “We can discuss this tomorrow. I need to take Aurora home now.”
Just as Maxwell bent down to lift Aurora, she suddenly woke up. Her eyes were clear, alert, and filled with a lethal intensity. “Let go of me!” she rasped.
Maxwell was taken aback. “Aurora, you’re drunk, I-”
‘Let go!” Aurora’s hand shot up to Maxwell’s throat. Although her grip was weak, Maxwell felt a slight pain as she accurately pressed two pressure points. It was as if she instinctively knew where to strike, even without looking.
