Chapter 172
Heath’s reaction was instant. He chased after her as Aurora laughed and ran.
Their clumsy chase on the soft sand was filled with laughter and playful shouts.
Heath, with his height and fast moves, finally caught Aurora, tumbling with her onto the sand.

Bathed in moonlight, they looked into each other’s eyes, seeing no one else but each other. Heath’s ears filled with the sound of the wind and Aurora’s quickened breath, his nose filled with her fresh scent.
He leaned down, kissing her soft lips.
Aurora closed her eyes, perhaps tipsy from the wine, or maybe it was the deep night making her weary.
She didn’t want to wake up, to think.
Her heart said yes, and she offered no resistance.
It was a long, passionate kiss. Heath sought her breath tenderly and patiently.
This time, Aurora responded surprisingly well, her reciprocation unspoken but understood.
For a long time, Heath buried his head in her hair, sighing softly, “Rory, you can’t escape anymore.”
“Huh?” Aurora didn’t understand.
“From now on, no matter where you go, I will bring you back, keep you locked by my side,” Heath’s voice whispered in her ear, like a vow.
Ever since that initial encounter in the Pendleton garden, with the girl in her evening gown falling into his arms, everything had become uncontrollable.
His heart, his emotions, were constantly pulled by her.
And now, he was certain he could never let go.
This girl, astute and alert, was like an ever–elusive mystery. Yet, no matter where she went, he would find her.
Aurora, don’t even think about running away.
Aurora’s face flushed with embarrassment, thankfully hidden by the night. She pushed Heath away, sitting up without a word.
Heath chuckled, “You’ve seen it all, why be shy?”
Aurora punched him lightly, “Nonsense!”
Heath clutched his chest, “Last time you were drunk, I clearly…”

Chapter 172
“Shut up!” Aurora swung at him again.
Heath caught her hand, looking at her, “Rory, thank you.”
Aurora paused, then smiled, “Thank me for what?”
Sitting by the sea, Heath said, “Thank you for the dinner, I really enjoyed it.”
Aurora laughed, “I should thank you. I was upset, but now I’m happy too.”
Heath looked at her, silent. He knew Aurora couldn’t be pressured; she’d speak when ready.
Aurora hugged her knees, swaying. She drew circles in the sand and sniffled, “Tonight, grandpa gave me a photo of my mom.”

“Grandpa also gave me my mom’s necklace,” Aurora pulled out a four–leaf clover necklace from her sweater, showing it to Heath before tucking it back, “My mom was beautiful, seemed gentle and elegant, must have been a wonderful woman.”
Heath stroked her hair, “Then why are you sad?”
Aurora took a deep breath, “Grandpa and dad say my mom was fickle, scandalous, and brought shame to the Pendletons. That’s why they don’t keep her things, don’t allow talk or remembrance of her.”
Tears welled in Aurora’s eyes as she turned to Heath, “I don’t believe it. She couldn’t have been like that, there must be a mistake.”
Heath wrapped her in his arms, gently patting her back. He felt her trembling shoulders and quiet sobs.
Aurora’s tears fell on Heath’s coat, vanishing.
She knew Sebastian might be lying, but her grandfather had no reason to deceive her.
If Callista hadn’t done something unforgivable, why would the Pendletons hide everything? After all, she was once Mrs. Pendleton.
But her grief wasn’t for Callista’s alleged actions; it was for her younger self, unable to protect that poor woman, unable to protect her own fragile being.
As her grandfather said, Callista was still her mother.
Yes, she now had a mother, not like the old Olivia, an orphan, the most superfluous person in the world, as if her death wouldn’t matter.
Leaning into Heath’s embrace, Aurora sniffled, asking with a nasal voice, “Can we watch the sunrise here?”
Heath tightened her coat, “Aren’t you cold?”
Aurora shook her head, “No, I want to see the sunrise.”
Heath held her cold hand, “Let’s go back to the car and come back later for the sunrise.”
Aurora shook her head, “I’ll stay here.”

Resigned, Heath sat with her. Two hours later, he woke the drowsy Aurora.
As dawn broke and a ray of sunlight peeked through the clouds, Aurora turned to Heath with a faint smile, ‘Happy New Year, Heath.”
He kissed her forehead, smiling, “Rory, Happy New Year.”
In this new year, she would live better, for Olivia, for Aurora, for Callista.
