Aurora, stunned, finally spoke, ‘So? A shootout at the dock, and that makes Heath unforgivable?”
Maxwell looked at her incredulously, struggling to believe that after hearing such news, Aurora stood there calmly defending Heath. Shouldn’t she be terrified or upset?
That man had deceived her, using their fireworks display as a cover for the shootout.
“You’re bewitched, Aurora!” Maxwell exclaimed. “One day, Heath will sell you off, and you’ll still be counting money for him!”
Suddenly, the screech of car brakes interrupted them. Aurora turned to see a familiar Rolls–Royce parked by the roadside. Kieran and Heath got out and looked over.
Aurora smiled sweetly, saying, “Heath is very rich, he doesn’t need to sell me.”

Ignoring the sand in his expensive shoes, Heath walked across the beach to Aurora, his gaze falling on her wrist held tightly by Maxwell. “Let her go!” he demanded coldly.
Maxwell, as if in a challenge, gripped her wrist tighter. Aurora, wincing, looked at Maxwell. “You’re hurting me, let go.”
Maxwell loosened his grip slightly, his tone pleading, “Aurora, please, go home.”
Aurora promptly shook off his hand, rubbing her wrist. Heath, touching her forehead, said, “Wait for me over there.”
Aurora nodded and stepped aside. Maxwell reached for her, but Heath blocked him.
“Heath! I know about what happened on New Year’s Eve! Aurora knows too! Don’t think of taking advantage her!” Maxwell, blocked by Heath, was visibly angry.
“Oh? And what do you think you know?” Heath sneered.
“The dock incident! Whether it’s drugs or arms dealing, don’t drag Aurora into this! I’ll keep her away from you!” Maxwell declared.
Though unsure of the extent of Heath’s involvement, Maxwell knew he was not simple,
Heath narrowed his eyes, a cold glint in them. “Our business doesn’t concern you!”
As Heath turned to leave, Maxwell grabbed his shoulder. “Heath! Stay away from Aurora!”
Heath suddenly spun around, punching Maxwell in the face. Maxwell fell onto the sand, his cheek swelling.
Heath flexed his hand, warning, “Maxwell, try taking her again, and it won’t just be a punch!”
He walked over to Aurora, who was still holding her shoes. She gave a thumbs–up, whispering, “Nice hook!”
Heath, resigned, shook his head and scooped Aurora up in his arms, heading for the car.
As Maxwell struggled to his feet, he saw only Heath’s broad back, talking to the girl in his arms. Aurora, wearing cartoon socks, dangled

her legs cutely, her demeanor utterly unlike the wary, cold front she had with Maxwell.
Kieran opened the car door, and Heath placed Aurora in the backseat before sitting down. Kieran drove back towards the city.
In the cat, Heath asked, “Where’s your phone?”
“Maxwell threw it away,” Aurora replied.
“What did he say to you?” Heath inquired further.
“Nothing much,” she shook her head.

“Heath,” Aurora looked at him. “He said you’re dangerous and I should stay away. He also said the New Year’s Eve fireworks were just a cover for the shootout at the dock.”
Heath tensed, knowing that if Aurora didn’t want to stay, nothing he did would matter. He feared this would make her build up her walls again.
After a long silence, Aurora smiled, lay on Heath’s lap, sighed, and said, “I’m tired, I want to sleep.”
Heath, momentarily stunned, gently touched her forehead. “Sleep then.”
With eyes closed, Aurora added, “You know, Maxwell said that one day you’d sell me off and I’d still be counting the money for you.”
Heath chuckled, “Really? And what did you say?”
Aurora opened her eyes, looked at him, and said, “I told him you’re rich enough not to need to sell me.”
Kieran laughed from the front. Aurora closed her eyes, turning to rest on Heath’s thigh.
She was tired, emotionally drained from the high–speed chase and the arguments. As she drifted off, she faintly heard a man’s heavy sigh.
Heath, looking at the sleeping girl in his arms, sighed. He knew she was waiting for his answer.
