Chapter 209
She carefully unwrapped the package, revealing a sleek, modern digital frame. The screen came to life, displaying a slideshow of meticulously curated photos and videos, each capturing a moment from their family’s history, annotated with thoughtful, heartwarming captions.
Evelyn scoffed inwardly as she looked at the digital frame. It was clearly a recent purchase, nothing antique about it. Even she could recognize that. Was Aurora really attempting to deceive their grandfather with something so modern? It seemed like a last–minute addition to the collection of gifts.
“Is this… a creation by the famous artist, Alexander Thompson? An elderly guest stepped forward, adjusting his glasses to take a closer look. He nodded affirmatively, “Absolutely! This is unmistakably Thompson’s work!”
“Alexander Thompson? The very same? Are you sure, Professor? His installations are extremely sought after and incredibly rare, especially for someone of his age, a middle–aged man in the crowd questioned.
“Lucky Mr. Pendleton, your granddaughter has outdone herself by acquiring a piece from Alexander Thompson! Look at the quality of these images, the unique presentation it’s definitely a recent creation,” Professor Ken marveled, entranced by the digital display.
–
“That’s right! Our Aurora is so dedicated! If I asked for the moon, she would try to get it for me!” the grandfather boasted with evident pride.
The grandfather joined Professor Ken, both admiring the digital frame. Alexander Thompson was known for his innovative art, blending technology with personal narratives. However, getting a custom piece from him was a rare feat, given his status in the art world.
For the grandfather, owning this piece was akin to a collector acquiring a rare masterpiece, a treasure to be shown off proudly.
Evelyn glared at the frame, exclaiming, “Impossible! How could Aurora get her hands on a work by Alexander Thompson?”
Professor Ken frowned, “I’ve studied art all my life. Do you think I’d be mistaken?”
His longstanding relationship with the grandfather was well–known. Seeing his reaction, the grandfather too seemed displeased.
It was Evelyn who had insisted on revealing this gift, obviously intending to embarrass Aurora in front of everyone. Now, she was openly challenging Professor Ken. Was she trying to ruin her grandfather’s birthday celebration?
Aurora, meanwhile, was completely confused. What about Alexander Thompson? What artwork? What rare piece?
She hadn’t organized this gift. The box Jay brought wasn’t her preparation either.
Aurora looked questioningly at Jay, who simply shrugged, seeming detached from the situation.
The grandfather pulled Aurora aside, “My dear, you must have gone through a lot of trouble for this.”
Aurora chuckled nervously, “It’s fine, Grandpa. As long as you like it…”
Professor Ken, filled with envy, said, “Mr. Pendleton, you are indeed fortunate! If I had such a considerate granddaughter, I’d wake up smiling every day!”
The grandfather, delighted, took Aurora’s hand, “The ball is about to start. Shall we head to the dance hall, my dear?”

Aurora nodded, still utterly confused but willing to play along to keep her grandfather happy.
‘Grandpa Evelyn called out, dissatisfied, trying to stop the grandfather.
She was the rightful Pendleton heiress, yet the grandfather blatantly ignored her, favoring Aurora instead.
Enough! the grandfather said sternly, his voice low but filled with an authoritative air that left Evelyn frozen.

Evelyn opened her mouth to speak, but a disapproving look from the grandfather silenced her. “Haven’t you embarrassed yourself enough already?”
Grandfather turned around, taking Aurora by the hand and leading her towards the dance hall.
At that moment, he felt a profound distaste for Evelyn and Madeline. They were always causing trouble, regardless of the occasion or who was around, as if they wanted the whole world to know about the discord in the Pendletons.
In contrast, Aurora had been endlessly patient and considerate towards them, without receiving a shred of gratitude in return.
Evelyn stood there, seething with anger. Why did Aurora always end up stealing the spotlight?
Turning around, Evelyn met Maxwell’s gaze. His eyes held no pity, just a cold observation. “I gave you an out,” he said, “but you brought this on yourself.”
Maxwell had tried to subtly guide the grandfather away earlier, hoping to end this pointless squabble. But Evelyn had insisted on pulling her grandfather into it, with Madeline even adding fuel to the fire. And the result? Aurora shone brightly once again, while Evelyn was left defeated.
It was like the Sophia incident all over again – constant provocations, followed by repeated failures, leading to ultimate disgrace.
Maxwell suddenly remembered Aurora’s icy gaze. Perhaps she really could do it. She had said she would drive them all out, one by one.
